Loudish droning noise coming from Xantia 1.9td

Unread post by Barbarian »

I seem to have a droneing sound comeing from my xantia TD above 30mph, Im not sure if this sound has always been their or not but its starting to bug me so i guessing not. Its not coming from the engine because if press the clutch and coast along letting the engine revs fall to idle speed the drone is still their. Any ideas?

iv no idea it does not seem to affect the driving of the car, just seems to occur above 30, how much would it br for small garage to fix the wheel bearing?

Driveshaft bearing.

Especially if steering/braking don't change the noise.

The bearing is cheap, but the driveshaft has to come out to change it. I'd guess it's an hour's work for a decent garage.

Wheel bearing is favourite, try cornering one way and then the other while listening, if it is a wheel bearing, the noise will get louder when the weight is thrown on to the side with the faulty one.

Since this a Xantia, not always! I had one go that I was convinced was the N/S/F, based on the above. But when I took it to the gargae, it turned out to be the O/S/F - ie it went quiet when loaded. Got to love these Xantias 8) Incidentally that was only noisy above 30 mph, but I agree, if there's no change when going round bends, then t's probably the O/S driveshaft bearing.

I dunno the noise seems to come and go, I did'nt notice it at all this morining on my way to work, yet last night on my way home from work it seemed quite loud, Maybe its just the general droneing from the car? if it s the O/S driveshaft bearing what would happen if i left it unrepaired for a good while?

Two exceptions to the rule!

My Xantia did the same thing, wheel bearing got quieter with load.

The o/s driveshaft bearing failed on my XM and resulted in comlete lack of drive, It allowed the shaft to slide out of the diff! But I think that is probably exeptional.

If it is the wheel bearing your best replacing both sides anyway, as if one as gone the other usually isn't far behind!

There is good sense in this..... in my experience with droning wheel bearings its very hard to identify for certain which wheel it is!

It's so easy to be confident which one it is, replace it, and find out you were wrong and still have the problem....

it will get louder and louder until it becomes a continuous grinding noise while the car is moving. It will also become visually obvious if you get under the car and have a look at the bearing.

The noise alone will eventually become un-bear-able during drive
