Xantia HDI MPG?

I dont want to get into a silly discussion, but please take a look at:

..the 1.8i version of the C5 has the exact weight as my Activa

C5's are 1290 -1558kg unladen! The 2.0 HDI 110 saloon is 1438kg

Its mostly down to the right foot, my XM estate (got to be heavier than a Xantia) averages 40-45 with a best of 55+, but then I'm old and dont drive very fast.

I get abot 550-600 miles from a full tank to the reserve light on average about £50 of diesel. Not sure of mpg but seem quite good.

I had about the same mpg when i went to thruxton the other week 500 + miles plenty of stick as well

I get 450-500 miles from a full tank in my estate. I average 38-40 mpg and had similar from my last Xantia hatch.

I have read that certain fules are more efficient than others. I think it may the Shell and BP (expensive ones) but haven't tried them so don't know if that affects it at all. I use good old supermarket soup. (all of Sainsbury's fuel is supplied by BP anyway!!)

Its the additives that make the difference.

For example, why do people buy expensive French mineral water rather than supermarket own brand british water? Its just water after all, but one contains more minerals than the other. Its the same with diesel!

Our local Bosch Authorised repairer says that its best to use big brand fuel and an occasional shot of millers doesn't hurt.

Do you think the BP fuel Sainsbury's use is a lesser quality than the stuff they have on their own forecourts?

Come on guys... we all know that they supply fuel to a standard as long as you use the correct standard for your vehicle.... what the hell!!

I've just filled up my Xantia, 603 Miles on 54 LITRES. 50 mpg. The best i've got to date! Normally get around 45 mpg, seems more dependent on the make of Diesel then how it's driven.
BP Ultimate is the worse (41 mpg), Normal BP, Shell & supermarket diesel average 45mpg, ESSO diesel seems to be the best overall.
It does feel quicker on BP ultimate, but not worth the extra price or drop in economy>
Anybody else found these differences? I've done 4000 Miles since the end of march, so the more mpg the better.

My normal garage is Shell in Wickham out of which I have averaged 45mpg. However, I have changed the oil and added Greased Lighning to the oil (this stuff got me 50 miles per tank more on my old petrol Xantia).

Was going to fill up at the Shell but passed the Sainsburys in Fareham at 95.9p per litre, 1p cheaper than the Shell! so filled up there. I will post the results.

The Greased Lightning sections on QVC really do make me laugh.

If an oil additive says it can improve your fuel economy by 10% by reducing friction, they're suggesting that AT LEAST 10% of the energy in your fuel is lost to friction in your oil, it is simply not the case.

"Greased Lightning Extended PTFE Oil" contains PTFE, that is how they claim to be reducing friction. I'll quote Dupont, the inventor of PTFE and holder of the Teflon trademark "Teflon is not useful as an ingredient in oil additives or oils used for internal combustion engines."

To get back to the point, if you were only getting 25-27 mpg from a 2 l Xantia, then 45 mpg from a C5 110 HDI sounds quite reasonable.
