Xantia HDI MPG?

Post by Garysz »

I've now filled up my new 2.0 HDI (110bhp) twice and have found that I am only getting 45 mpg as a maximum. The chap who sold it (and lots of other people) said that they regularly get 50+ mpg. With diesel now close to £1 a litre every mile counts!

The car has 112k miles on it and has full service history. A majority of my miles to date are 25 miles a day through country lanes at between 40 and 50 mph, no real traffic jams encountered. My previous car was a 2l petrol Xantia which achieved 25-27 mpg.

Is it me or the car? What are your tips for boosting the mpg?

Has the usual filters been replaced recently?

Dont think that is to bad a figure really, maybe with the 110bhp it likes to drink a little more?

According to the spec, the 110 is capable of better economy than the 90BHP model - suppose the intercooler etc. make for a more efficient unit. Having said that, I'm sure that regular application of heavy right boot could make it thirsty!

Having had a 2.1 Xantia for eight years, I've now changed to a C5 138HDi. It's fitted with a fuel computer and last week I took a drive down to Dover. On the outward journey I set the cruise to 67mph and the computer gave 80miles, 53mpg, Av 62mph. On the return, cruise set to 75, the computer gave 80miles, 42mpg, Av 68mph. Maybe your speed and right boot has something to do with it. 45mpg doesn't sound too bad to me.

I find that my diesel does best at a steady speed with light throttle openings.... best I ever got was between 50-70mph on a motorway, I think it was 52.5 mpg based on a full tank to full tank method. :)

Averaging about 40 - 45mpg at the moment

Ive just driven down to my house in france from Nottingham in a Xantia HDi 110 which was 900 miles. The tank was full and I put a total of about 17 galls in. Door to door was 16 hours including the ferry, so I reckon on 65 - 70 average speed and just over 52mpg.

Not bad as it is very easy cruise at 90.

Thanks for your thoughts. I thought it may be a symptom of a problem but it would appear not.

As for heavy feet - far from it - I frequently put it in neutral and roll down the Downs where I live! If I want to go fast and furious I use my motorbike!

If you were getting 25-27 out of you petrol car then 45 mpg from your diesel sounds pretty good. You can usually reckon on a third improvement with the diesel or a bit more with a direct injection. The reason you can get better fuel consumption with a bigger engine is that the smaller the throttle opening with a diesel the better the economy as its much more efficient with a weak mixture, so as you inprove the power to weight ratio you have the potential to improve the fuel economy, providing that you dont make constant use of the increased power.

Doesn't coasting in neutral use more fuel than letting the car run down the hill in gear but with no throttle?

ABSOLUTLY!! When in gear in OVER RUN, as its called the fuel is 'Switched off' automatically.. When you coast down hill, the engine is useing fuel to Idle the engine.. You also have engine braking, and so easyer on the brake pads..

GarySz

Have you and partly siezed brakes holding on slightly.. I had a Xantia HDi110 with 75k on the clock, it avaraged around 50mpg.
Agreed too, the 110bhp is more efficient and better on fuel then the 90bhp..

On a personal note.. I have a Xantia S2, on an S plate, 1998, it is fitted with the XUD Td 1.9 unit.. Its done about 157,000k It amazingly averaged my 43mpg on a run of roughly 70 - 80mph!! I was astonished, as my S1 Xantia struggled 40 mpg. That had done 160,000 + miles. Strange as the S2 is a heavyer car...

I average 44mpg in my 2.0 HDI 110 C5, which is a lot heavier than a Xantia. If I push it on the motorway with 4 people, the average drops towards 40. Or, if I treat it gently and stick to 55ish on country roads then the average is more like 50.
