C4 B7 Window Regulator

Unread post by Must be Mad »

Well just as i was getting along with this car it decides to s**t on me again!

Bloody typical had to be during a torrential rain storm went to close passenger front window twang wire snapped and down it slid.

Could not get the bloody window to move had to take the door trim off and the horrible foam insulation backing sure as fate crusty broken wire dangling, why oh wh6y cant they just use stainless wire?

After lot of swearing and mopping up jammed it up with bit of plastic pipe cut to size.

Replacement regulator ordered, any tips on how to do this?

Thanks all

cheers for that the later B7 is slightly different the motor is inside the door attached the regulator looks like it has to all come out as one.

Waiting until i get the replacement see how it goes in hopefully work it back from that

Well that took a bit longer than I thought.

Removal door card no problem, only broke one clip lucky I had some replacements so drama there. At the outer edge 2 torx screws under little cover pop them off undo the screws, door release, carefully pop off the surround with a trim tool or similar. Door handle pop the little cover and undo the torx screw. Rest are plastic clips start from bottom edge work round then lift up off the top next to the window seals.

White foam save yourself the pain take sharp knife cut around the door pull then slowly work a long flexible blade to ease away the glue the foam will tear just looking at it. Now have access not great but access, need to peel off the black sticker at the top follow the line of the window slider remove this to access the top mount bolt. Other bolts are visible lower edge of the slider at bottom of the door and next to the motor 10mm heads with slide out fixing.

2 bolts holding the glass to regulator, lower it all the way down allows access to the torx bolts think T20 can't mind, remove them undo the first you will feel it get loose, hold the glass as you undo the second, its an idea to crack them bot when still fixed in place. The lift glass all the way and hold in place with thick packing tape. Then only need to loosen the lower and middle 10mm head bolts they can slide upwards out the door, the top bolt behind the black sticker i found it easer to take that out as not a lot room to move upwards.

Unplug the motor then wrestle the whole assembly out the door, mine was easier as wires broken allowed the slider to move when squeezing it out.

Now here is my advice if ever doing this again pay the extra tenner and get a full kit with a motor, once you remove the original assembly you need to remove the motor, Remove the 3 torx screws. It will still have a mounting flange and the plastic drum for the wires they both need to come off. Mounting plate no issues fell off the plastic wheel after lost of nasty words i took a hacksaw and cut it half to split it off the shaft. Years of corrosion expanded it to a point where it was never sliding off, this will then reveal the matching 3 drive pegs. Be sure to clean up the shaft and lube it before fitting to the new regulator, or else it will get stuck and damage the drum and make the wire jump out of place as wrestle with it, ask me how I know! Use the bolts you took out to remove motor, line up the holes and drive them into the plastic casing.

Slide back in bolt up check operation couple of times up and down might have to jog the switch until it relearns.

Pop door card back on remember to check clips and reattach switch wires insert 2 torx screws at side and torx screw holding the door handle in place, clip on door release cover
job done.
