Berlingo SMEG audio glitches

Unread post by Badgerjockey »

Hi all.

Have joined this forum in the hope someone can help.

I’ve had Berlingos for years but this is my first with the SMEG touchscreen head unit. I own a 65 plate XTR.

Infuriatingly, whenever I am playing audio using an iPhone plugged in via USB and CarPlay engaged, there is a glitch/stutter sound every few seconds. Sometimes the delay between glitches widens to every couple of minutes but sure enough it always happens. It is maddening and means I have to revert to using Bluetooth for audio, which obviously means I cannot use the CarPlay functions at the same time (BT is disabled when CarPlay is active). So, I have a practically useless CarPlay head unit if I want my own audio.

What’s more is that there is a four-five second lag between pressing play/pause on my phone when connected via BT and the head unit responding. Not terrible but not ideal either.

Lastly, the handsfree microphone volume seems to be quite random. I can make one phone call and the recipient is able to hear me just fine, while the next I may be near impossible to hear. Anyone know what’s going on there?

I have tried updating the software at a dealer who tells me I have the latest version and they can’t do anything about it. Their only suggestion was to buy a second hand head unit off eBay, fit it myself and bring it to them to get it coded to the car. They quoted me £1,200 for a new head unit…

Attached are photos of the software version screens. Is anyone able to tell me if I can update the software further? Or, if not, whether I can roll back to some stable version which corrects the issue?

If anyone knows of other causes and fixes of the fault that would be much appreciated too.

Thank you.

Hi and welcome, I'm afraid this is not my area of expertise but someone with the right knowledge will see your post soon. :)

Your firmware version appears to be the latest available.

All I can suggest at the moment for your glitches is to delete the Bluetooth link on both the head unit (the SMEG) and phone and then remake and pair.

Thanks. The audio glitches/stutters are when I’m using CarPlay, I.e. am plugged in via USB. Not BT.

The lag when using BT is universal regardless of the recency of pairing.

Yes, should've realised, you did say, sorry.

Having said that, have you tried connecting through BT?

If you mean BT CarPlay, then unfortunately it doesn’t have that capability. If you mean BT just for audio then yes - that’s where the lag comes in.
