AdBlue warnings

Unread post by dram773 »

Morning all,
After a few months of trouble-free motoring, the Service > Urea > 7000 warning came up whilst about 60 miles from home. Added 10L AdBlue next morning, but Service > Urea still came up when turned on ignition, plus Engine Fault once started. However, covered about 100 miles during the day without the 7000 warning coming up. I've lent out my Diagbox so can't check error codes at present but was wondering (hoping) that the ECU just hasn't caught up yet. Is it worth me trying a BSI reset? Many thanks.

What is the 7000 warning, is it saying 700 miles countdown ?
When filling Adblue many of us also add Wynns crystal clean to try to avoid problems from crystals building up which could result in needing a new tank/injector. If you have not put any in it is worth the cost.

Hi Paul,
Yes sorry 700 miles countdown.
Managed to retrieve my Diagbox and clear the P20E8 00 pressure of urea fluid fault (intermittent). Sadly, Service and Urea warning lights back on after about 10 miles (but no Engine Fault light or mileage countdown).
I'll order some Wynns crystal clean - there doesn't seem to be a local stockist.
If there is a problem with the tank/injector, is this likely to be covered by the Stellantis compensation arrangement I read about?
Thanks

Some details here of the scheme viewtopic.php?t=84999

I think I bought the Wynns at our local GSF, they have branches in Somerset.

Morning all,
So - poured in a couple of bottles of Wynn's and cleared the P20E8 fault again. Haven't driven it yet but will need to go to Dorset and back on Thursday, so fingers crossed. Any idea how long it takes the Wynn's to do its magic (if, indeed, it does dissolve crystals rather than just prevent them forming)? Many thanks.

I've yet to see any evidence that the anti crystallisation stuff does anything...but I'm ready to be proved wrong!

P20E8 seems to be low pressure, so either the pump is packing up, or the pressure sensor is playing up. You need to watch the live data and listen to the pump to see what it is doing, but you would need to catch it in failed state.... If the pressure sensor, then it can possible be repaired - there is a thread on here about it. If the pump, repair might also be possible if you can get hold of a pump.

On a 2017, unlikely PSA will offer much (except emptying of your wallet!).

should be instant on contact with crystals , i pored abottle in with a full tank of adblue 12 months ago only done 2k miles this year so used hardly any adblue but not had any problems so far.

Hello Richard W and John79,
Many thanks for your notes and apologies for this belated update.
The Service and Urea came back on after about 20 miles, so looks as though the Wynn's hasn't worked.
I'll have a look at the live data. I guess a blocked injector could trigger the same warning and at least that seems to be an easy and relatively inexpensive fix.
If its the tank unit, I might risk a used one from a breakers unless PSA can offer an economically viable option through the compensation scheme - I'm waiting to hear back from them, although the agent did suggest that the mileage (49k) was more of a factor than vehicle age (2017).
Good luck all

Seems Stellantis online agent doesn't know much. Local dealer confirmed today that my 2017 missed the 8-year compensation cutoff by a couple of months and despite only 49k miles it is not eligible.
So I'll be following the excellent urea system investigation/repair thread in hope that it is just the injector and/or pressure sensor and not a failed pump.
Will any 10 bar pressure gauge suffice or are there any particular recommendations?
Cheers!

Latest:
Removed AdBlue injector; just a light coating of powdery soot, no heavy deposits and no crystals around jets or in housing, so carefully wiped and replaced. Reinitialised DeNOx and cleared P20E8 fault. Drove about 4 miles before Urea and Service lights returned, no Engine Fault light - so same as before.
Live Data shows pressure of urea fluid not moving from 4 bar (sic = 0) and quantity of urea solution injected 0, so looks like time to drop out the tank.
For me, a new tank is out of the question but I'm not sure if a later used tank will need ECU updating and if I can do it with Diagbox or would need dealer access to PSA servers - see separate thread.
Good luck all!

A 4 bar reading means that the pressure hasn't reached 4 bar so could easily be 0 bar. It could be the Adblue pump I'm afraid.

Hi Paul,
I've drained about 12L out of the tank - seemed clear to the naked eye - and dropped out the tank. I'm planning to test the pump, but it seems I have to hook up both the pump and the shut-off valve simultaneously to one of my spare 12V car batteries (use them for the electric fencing), so I need to get some probe leads and connectors. Meanwhile, I've been offered an (externally) identical and tested tank from a frontal damaged 2016 308 for £205, with 60-day warranty.
Cheers

Hi, just some random comments:
1. One post said that you managed 20 miles before the fault occurred. Another 10 mile and some 4 miles. All showing intermittent. So sounds like an intermittent electrical fault to me
2. When you look at the live data, the Adblue catalyst in the exhaust must be at least 175C before the pump will run. I didn’t achieve this with a stationary car, it had to be driven. So have you tried the live data when the car is being driven?
3. To understand what may be wrong with the system, please have a look at the different stages of the system with live data, when driven:
a) Does "Authorisation of the injection of the urea fluid based on the temperature" display "Injection authorised"?
b) Pressurisation: Does it follow this sequence:
? While the cat temperature is heating up, the status is "pump module stopped" + bleed status "on-standby" and pressure 4.0bar*.
? When the denox catalytic temperature reaches 175C (system 1 info), the pump runs, pressurising the system to about 6.0bar. This is usually after about 5 miles of driving. The denox system bleed status changes quickly (within a second) from standby, to "pressurisation", to "steady pressure - average consumption". The pump status changes to "running" (again within a second) to "pump module stopped with urea solution". The pressure changed from 4.0bar to about 5.9bar
? *Note that the displayed "urea fluid pressure" does not drop below 4.0bar even if the actually pressure is below this. If the pressure sensor is disconnected then it shows 0.5bar.

Hi Tom309,
Many thanks for your detailed notes.
As I have now taken the tank out of the vehicle, I cannot run any diagnostics live data or drive the vehicle. However, your information will be valuable when I refit or replace with a used tank.
I, too, suspected an intermittent electrical fault - until I read that P20E8 often appears as intermittent because it resets when the ignition is cycled. If I find the pump and shut-off valve are working and providing 6 bar pressure when I bench test the tank, then I think the problem is likely to be the tank circuit board or the wiring. If a (tested and working) replacement tank solves the problem, that would eliminate the wiring etc. and confirm that the original tank is faulty. At least, that's my hypothesis :)
