C4 Grand Picasso died on me!
Stopped at traffic lights, engine cut out, would not restart! Much chaos in Gloucester due to me! A nice guy in a toyota towed me across and out of the way.
RAC guy said the engine speed was 0. He thinks its this sensor here Engine speed sensor, is this also the crankshaft sensor? Im looking to buy one and fit it asap!!
Any help appreciated!

Re: C4 Grand Picasso died on me!
It is but I didn't think they caused an engine to cut out, just not start.

Notice the BX is still top the list but sadly gone

Re: C4 Grand Picasso died on me!
See if it will restart once the engine has cooled down - this can be a sign the sensor is failing but eventually will not let the engine run at all instead of just when it is hot. I replaced the crank sensor on a friends Corsa and that would cause the engine to stop when hot but run again once cold. Fitting a new part fixed it. If it does fail there might not be a fault code since the engine needs to run to give one.

That's the camshaft sensor your thinking of.moizeau wrote: 30 May 2025, 15:50 It is but I didn't think they caused an engine to cut out, just not start.
If the ECU looses the signal from the crank sensor the engine will stop immediately.
Yes, that is the Crank/engine speed/TDC sensor in the picture.

What engine? Really need some diagnostics with live data to pin point the issue.

RAC said crankshaft sensor, but he said it was the one he pointed out on the picture.
*edit* I've just been out and tried to start it. It made some less than pleasant noises cranking and then fired up!
Looking on Amazon as i'd like to get this done this weekend! GSF dont have it and neither do Eurocar parts!
This is the GSF one!

This one on amazon, it says it fits!

I'm pretty sure the Citroen number for your crankshaft sensor is 1920GJ so if the part quotes that number I think it will fit!!
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

Re: C4 Grand Picasso died on me!
That doesn't sound good (no pun!) - crank sensors do occasionally go on this engine; the bad noises are more concerning... HP pumps can give up the ghost.ProfessorPike wrote: 30 May 2025, 16:35

It was engine starting sounds, but they were intermittent and sounded angry!!RichardW wrote: 30 May 2025, 18:07That doesn't sound good (no pun!) - crank sensors do occasionally go on this engine; the bad noises are more concerning... Re: C4 Grand Picasso died on me!
If no crank signal it will crank a second or so then stop, then try again, then stop.
Note, don't buy a cheap one off Amazon / eBay - they are likely to be worse than useless!

It's a fedi bilstein. What brand should I be going for?
I'll stick it on and look to source a decent replacement ASAP.

Again, the main problem can be counterfeit parts.
I needed a lambda sensor for my Mazda. £50 from Temu, £600 from Mazda.
Fortunately? the car was written off and saved me the cost

Re: C4 Grand Picasso died on me!
Febi probably OK, if that's what it actually is - as Steve says, a lot are counterfeit cheap Chinese knockoffs. In the case of a crank sensor it will probably work or not, a lot of the more complex stuff sort of works, but sends erroneous / confusing messages which upset the ECU. OEM is probably Bosch or Siemens, but these can be fakes as well. Minefield!
