C5X7 2.0 hdi auto just stalled twice. No clue

Unread post by aerodynamica »

Arg, just fitted new spheres and it's sublime so treated it to a full tank of diesel and a car wash. Engine running in the car wash (,I know, you're meant to turn off) and it stalls. Waited a bit starts, runs stalls again.

Chanced it back 2 miles home, made it plugged in the lexia and there is nothing that explains it. Only main fault is P0495 to do with the radiator fan but that's been like that for months.

Just no idea now. If it was fuel related I'd expect a fault regarding fuel pressure. If it was crank or cam sensor related I'd expect engine speed fault but nothing.

Help!

Wonder if filling the tank to the top from quite low had churned up some gunge in the tank and some strainer gets clogged. I'd expect a fault code though.

Other possibility is water got in to the ecu area during the wash 🤔 no sign of dampness there but it's very warm today and was hot under the bonnet so dries out fast.

What, kind of wash program u used, simple or also the underside of the car?
About the bottom just repair this with a inner gaskabel from a scooter.

I was a wash program with extra passes so might have washed underneath but I'm not sure. It is the plastic paddle that has broken, not the cable (surprisingly)

I'm also wondering if the engine ecu is getting too hot. The radiator fan is not working. I've actually just removed it to look and it's quite rusty on the motor housing.

I was not sure which one is the fuse for the fan. The yellow midi fuse 60A in the extra fuse box beside the battery as far as I can find but this looks like it is the only one without a connection to anything.

This yellow fuse is supposedly the fan?

I see no terminal connection from it

Oh, anyone know what this large relay is for? It appears to have a damaged cover exposing the relay.

It's supplied from the white 80A fuse, it's on the inner wing next to the battery

If that big relay is to do with the fuel pump I doubt it would enjoy getting damp.

But........I know it's hot in the UK today, but it's not that hot, low 20's?
Sorry can't help with your issue, apart from the obvious, water has been sucked in to the inlet ducting. I would remove cleanband dry, also look at the egr valve filter, it's to the right of the rocker cover - just a stab-in-the-dark, but worth a look. Good luck.

Checked the air intake filter housing and popes to the turbo and I see no sign of water ingress. Wasnt too sure about the egr valve filter itself so I'll revisit that.

Thoughts on various ideas mentioned above:

Tank run from fall to empty equals crud.
Fuel pick up is in the bottom of the tank so if crud was low down, it would likely pick that up anyway. If floaty crud then filling tank would take it further from pick-up. However in either case there is the fuel filter and blocking that would be more likely fuel starvation = lack of power at high load/ revs rather than konk out at idle speed.

Big relay box:
On older Peugeot/Citroen that sort of size housed the glow plug relay - not sure if the C5 uses the same or it's done differently on a more modern HDI. But would not expect to the lead to konking out at idle , on a warm day, either.

Crank or cam sensor getting wet then drying out again? I guess it could possibly not have fault code if ECU didn't think the engine stopping running was abnormal. But I think if one or other sensor played up you'd get the "not synchronized" type faults too, seems unlikely.

Perhaps take lexia along for the ride for the moment but otherwise try not to worry about it! Might never do it again, might start to do it more often and give you a chance to diagnose - roll the dice and see what you get out I guess! :)

Good thoughts Matt! The car has continued to run at idle and maneuver since returning home. Not a hint of the issue since the event earlier. Will see. Might just bring the lexia along

I've seen this referred to as 'protection relays' but not sure exactly what they are. 80A is quite a large current to deal with.
