Communication (Module Programming)

Unread post by Myles97 »

Still in need of assistance, there seems to be a communication fault with the steering rack. Having replaced the faulty rack with a used one from eBay, the car now drives straight after previously having multiple alignments. There is now an EPS fault which wasn't there prior to me changing the rack.

Anyway, I take it the rack needs programming somehow for it to communicate properly with the car. I've gone through the special functions of my diagnostics tool xTool D7 and selected replacement parts > steering rack > calibrate and completed but codes exist.

U1321

Live data is fine, steering angle sensor shows its working and the power steering is functioning as normal. The car itself just doesn't like it lol.

Ive opened up the old steering rack to look at the module but it doesn't appear to be an easy swap, ribbon cables are soldered directly to the motherboard and seems like it'd be a faff. Surely though modules from other vehicles can be programmed to another car. If so, how is this done? I have no clue. Thank you.

You probably need a dealer level tool, and will likely need a token from PSA to access their servers to download the data. Sometimes there are facilities to download the data off the old module and write it to the new module, but that will depend on the scanner and the module.

I certainly wouldn't be driving this with these faults..... There's no guarantee the exchange unit was working, so you may have fitted a faulty unit.

U1121: Fault no communication with the electric power steering ECU: No signal
Fault Code: U1321
Description of Fault:
  • Fault in communication with the electric power steering. Steering wheel angle frame absent; Fault confirmation time: Immediate
Conditions for Fault to clear:
  • Front door exterior opening control handle ; Vehicle speed higher than 20 km/h
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active:
  • Cutting of all ESP operations
  • Switching on of the warning lamp and/or warning message: ASR/ESP indicator lamp, Message, Audible beep
Symptoms:
  • Loss of control of the vehicle, no regulation of under-steer or over-steer
  • Minimal locking of wheels in conditions of poor grip
  • Wheel slip
  • Deviation of vehicle on braking
Suspect Areas:
  • CAN harness
  • Stability control ECU
  • Electric power steering ECU

Might be worth while merging these 2 topics since they are referring to the same problem. In the other topic it says the replacement rack is from a different year car so might not be the same as the original so could be the reason for the problems.

Whereabouts are you in the country?
There might be a forum member nearby with Diagbox (the PSA OEM vehicle diagnostics) who can help - there's map of members who have it (and are willing to help others) linked off the forum.

What year is the car? In fact what car is this?

What version of Diagbox are you running?

2015 DS3 1.6HDi

Diagbox V7.83

Thought if I got the sort of official tool copy, I'd be able to configure the module to communicate with the car again. Citroen dealer says £2000 to do this.

You can't do this without a purchased token and a PSA account for later versions of Diagbox as ECU programming is usually secured requiring online server access to do as I've explained here or on your other similar thread.

I don't accept a dealer charging £2k for configuring the power steering ECU! That's not credible - maybe for replacing the rack with a new one and configuration and labour maybe, but not for configuration alone which is just diagnostic time at about £120 an hour or thereabouts.

They may however refuse to configure a part that they have not supplied for safety reasons, as the replacement part may be faulty and it would have obvious legal issues if they were to programme it and something later went wrong causing an accident....

Have you checked yet if the part you have put on your car is the same as the original since from your other similar topic you posted the following.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The replacement rack was from 2009 model 1.6d and put on a 2015 model. So not sure that would matter too much.

Any suggestions please. DS3 1.6hdi 2015
