Car won’t display anything

Unread post by C4OAR »

So it’s my wife’s father’s funeral, I’ve dropped our son to nursery, come home, showered, she’s gone to car and plugged her phone in. I’ve come out and as I leave front door, alarm goes off so I turn off.

Now, not sure if related but when I turn the car on I can’t get anything on either display than the key icon. I’ve tried both sets of keys. I’ve come out and locked the car, waited and tried again and nothing.

It lets me put into drive mode but obviously that’s not safe as no information on any screen.

Please help

73 Reg C4 Auto.

Any ideas?

Being under warranty you might have to take it back to the dealer but plugging the phone in might have blown a fuse so look in your handbook at the fuse lists. Did the phone charge up ?

Really sorry this has happened today of all days for you :(
Agree with Paul, that as your car is under warranty, your best bet is probably to call the dealer for repair/assistance (or does it also come with free breakdown cover/citroen assistance? In which case call them - still under warranty)

Thank you for your responses. I’m heading back now so will take a look. Unfortunately I got my Citroen from Manchester (based in Kent) as they had a better deal so my local Citroen basically said they would not
Help. Which was quite terrible so worries me.

If it were a fuse, could I do this with basic knowledge?

That is appalling and as far as I can see, not in accordance with the conditions of the citroen warranty, which just says:
On detection of a defect, your vehicle should be taken for repair to a CITROEN authorised repairer
during normal opening hours.
https://www.citroen.co.uk/content/dam/c ... _TANDC.pdf

It looks like the free roadside assistance (by RAC) is only provided for 12 months on a new Citroen - unless the manchester dealer provided you with an extra year as part of your purchase?
If not, then I appreciate today is probably not the day you want to be having a fight with someone, but I strongly suggest you don't accept that approach from your local dealer and demand to speak to the service manager (or higher).
If they don't change their tune and help you, then ring Citroen direct and complain about the dealer? Their number seems to be 0800 996 1951

The handbook (did it come with a physical one, or only electronic?) should show you where all the fuses are and which fuse covers what.
If you can identify the fuse that you think runs the display, then you can pull the fuse out and look at it - a blown fuse is pretty obvious and can be replaced with a new spare one of the same size/rating.
If you don't already have an electronic copy of the handbook, you can download it from here: https://service.citroen.com/ACddb/index.html

Thank you. Yes they were rather rude and hung up on me. I queried the keyless entry and he said ‘im not prepared to help you, if you want a service, I would not prioritise you or try and fit you in. Go to where you got your car’ I tried a complaint through the franchise but didn’t even get a response.

I’m unable to find a fuse list on my c4 manual. It literally just has text for changing a fuse, installing and no responsibility but there’s no breakdown on which fuse to check.

I’ve seen diagrams online but not sure which one applies to c4

The electronic manual online should provide full info on where to find the fuses boxes, the layout of them, how to remove and inspect fuses etc.?
Make sure you set the language to 'english' at the top right of the webpage I linked above, first - then find the right car and year range etc.
That brings up the relevant manual on screen.
Scroll down the menu on the left to get to 'alphabetical index' then click 'F' and then there should be a few pages listed. e.g. 'fuses', 'fusebox dashboard', 'fusebox engine compartment' and look through each of those.

Your experience from that dealer is utterly unacceptable.
Absolutely non-sesensical as well - why would a customer ever chose to buy from them, if that's the experience they have?

I’ve attached from the electronic manual. Just says this unfortunately. This is from the link kindly supplied and also matches the wording in the manual I received electronically.

Honestly, I feel I’m unable to ask the dealership to help it was so unprofessional. I even tried to buy
From them originally, test drove but they never even got back to me with a quote despite chasing. Then to act like that. It’s a Wilmoths dealership but they didn’t respond either.

Gosh, that's absolutely ridiculous. I'm shocked, to be honest with you.
How different is a C4 to a C4/C4X, I wonder? That manual does include info on the fuse boxes.

The year it goes up to is before 2023 which is all I can work out. I’m not even sure how I’d get to a dealership if the display doesn’t give me anything? Surely it’s illegal to drive if you don’t know what speed you’re going?

It's not illegal to drive if you don't have a working Speedo per-se, but it would fail an MOT, yes.
You can use a navigation app on your phone to display speed by GPS though, so at least you know what speed you're doing.

Thank you Iain, your advice has been really important and I’m hoping this is fixed asap. Not a great day for it to happen but I guess there’s a justification to 2 cars for a change.

I'd be trying a BSI reset before anything else.

Next appointment is 6 weeks away! I can’t believe that they expect someone to not drive for 6 weeks but also it’s not a danger or priority? How are people meant to work? Childcare?
