That sounds like the same issue I had with my C5 when I first got it. Lots of fumes and gunky oil round the injectors. I cleaned it all with carb cleaner and re torqued the clamp bolts and had no further trouble in the next 45000 miles after which I sold it! :-D

Was yours an 8 or 16 valve version?

You may have two problems. A loose injector clamp, giving you the exhaust smell, and a separate oil leak which is unconnected to the exhaust smell.
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

In fact the exhaust smell could be from a number of places so may not be the injector at all!
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

Thanks for your suggestions. I removed the air filter box and there is this same oil/diesel/carbon all over the components under the air filter box. Do you think this is all caused by an injector clamp being loose?

I don't see how it could be. On the 16v engines the injector goes through the cam cover before going into the cylinder head. It's when the seal between the injector and the cam cover is compromised that you get oil leakage. It's simply not possible on the 8v engines as the injector doesn't go through the cam cover.
