Hi
As per the title, with exhaust fumes too. There is lots of stuff on the injector second closest to the gearbox. Is this due to the injector bolts loosening over time and is there a permanent fix for this?
Thanks

Very likely.
When the clamps loosen, oil leaks out and pools, then hardens into carbon. You can try tightening them down again, but if the damage is done inside, they'll eventually loosen again. The fumes are the worst as they get sucked into the air intake and into the cabin.
A relative had this and had them tightened several times, but never got it sorted, so they got shot of it, rather than all the hassle.
You may feel differently and want some further investigation - so depends how bad things are inside.

Thanks for replying so quickly. Do you know where the oil comes from?
By inside do you mean the area alongside the injector?
Could the oil be contaminated by bits of carbon which means the turbo may eventually be starved of oil?

Just read the post. So inside means within the combustion cylinder?

Surely this thread is about an 8 valve 1.6 Hdi and a lot (all?) references and recommendations are about the earlier 16 valve engine, which is a known bad design? The 8 valve engine is much better about sealing and clamping and frankly I'm somewhat surprised to hear about it also having a problem.

Here are some pictures - please can you have a look and advise if it really is an injector seal? Not sure if my labels are helpful.

The 8v engines seem to suffer from oil leakage at the top end which comes from either the cam housing to head joint or the oil seal on the camshaft. Our 1.6 8v has a slight leak on the top end somewhere and has had for several years. I'm waiting for the miles to build up a bit more and get it sorted out when it's time to replace the timing belt.

So do you think this is just an oil leak?

It's certainly a possibility. Have a look at the photos on the second page of this thread from four years ago when I changed an injector.

As I said in that thread, the oil level on the dipstick doesn't appear to go down. Do you have a noticeable difference on your car between oil changes?

Haven't had the car long enough to find out about the oil level. Would exhaust fumes come out of the cam housing joint or cam seal?

No, I wouldn't have thought so. Not unless there was something seriously wrong!

There's exhaust fumes there when the engine is on. Is it okay to use washing up liquid and water to try to clean up whatever this stuff is?

Can anyone recommend a Peugeot/diesel specialist around/in East London/south Essex please?
