Hi,
Need a little help on this one. My Offside rear parking brake seems to be locked on when the cable is attached underneath. this is only affecting one side, the other side seems to release fine. I'm told by my mechanic that its the parking brake module but I'm not convinced. if it was the module then surely it would have affected the brakes on both sides. I'm trying to find out what else would cause it to only affect that one side. The brake caliper was changed just over a year ago.

Re: Rear electric parking brake module
On this vehicle the Electronic Module Contracts or extends a Primary brake cable to the rear. From there it attaches to a mechanism that holds the rear left and right cables that act on the calipers.
So it is possible that either the left or right secondary cable (depending on the side you have the issue with) is worn or faulty. It could also be that the caliper itself is faulty of course.
Here you can see the mechanism and the 2 rear cables (2) & (3) shown.

From what I've discovered, it may be the ratchet in the caliper thats causing the problem. The cable you mention still releases and tensions fine when connected, but the caliper doesnt fully release the brake so the pads stay touching, effectively like the brake is on. I've added a temporary video link to let you see better. From your diagram it would be cable 2, the secondary that you are looking at in the video.

Your video is entirely blank, so not much use I'm afraid.

Re: Rear electric parking brake module
If anything I would say the caliper is not releasing properly - was the part a genuine or aftermarket one? Are the torques right?

Re: Rear electric parking brake module
it would have been an aftermarket one. And I can only presume with the torques as it was done at a garage. My landlords garage says it could be the parking brake(EPB) module, then hes saying the handbrake cable (which the video shows its not the cable) or the EPB motor. So I'm getting convinced its the caliper with what I saw.GiveMeABreak wrote: 23 Feb 2023, 17:27 If anything I would say the caliper is not releasing properly - was the part a genuine or aftermarket one? Re: Rear electric parking brake module
I can't be the the EPB motor - simply because it is applying the same power to both sides and the left side is working as it should.
I can't see it being the specific cable if it is attached correctly, so that leaves the caliper. It just seems to be sticking. If you are going to replace it I would avoid ECP in my personal experience and for many others here.
Get a decent branded one as you know the quality will be better.

So had the caliper changed last week and not had any issues since, so far. He also had to changed my discs an pads, the brake pad was obviously worn down with driving with the brake touching the disc and the disc needed replacing cos the first garage had stripped the threads when he put my wheel back on. But at least its fixed now.

Re: Rear electric parking brake module
Great. It's essential to replace the disc pads when you replace the discs, otherwise old pads will have wear patterns that will score the new discs prematurely. At least you know to avoid the first garage in future - that was a potentially dangerous and costly mistake regarding stripping the wheel threads.
I would take the old 'new' caliper back to ECP for a refund as it was not fit for purpose, which will show another caution for those thinking of getting anything non-branded from these people.
