Re: Ends...
There is a "Town End Farm" in Sunderland, presumably a farm at some time but an housing estate now.
A severe dearth of signs on Google but: And while searching found:
This character, "Shane", apparently a resident of TEF but I used to see him in the Washington Galleries some years ago and also, although I can't swear it was the same person but looked to be, he was hanging around outside the Cherry Tree pub in Ayton when I walked through there a few weeks ago.

Lovely
Is that the home of what was formerly known as the Post Office and Civil Service Sanatorium Society?
I'm still a member of it... Not had cause to use it yet...

Not the finest piece of driving by the Falcon but it is at Hill-end (2003) and an original photo.
Had to wait for the recovery services to make their way to remote Weardale to tug the old Sierra out of the rut, while all the while having a train to rendezvous with in Durham later that afternoon to add pressure, and a walk up the hill to get a phone signal!

I'll bet the family were really impressed with you!

I was teaching our eldest daughter to drive at the time!
On the plus side the weather was nice, fuel line didn't pop off when it was unceremoniously pulled out, and we made it to the station in time.

I had to do a call in Guildford today, passing through West End Village on route.

Re: Ends...
I am pleased that the FCF Archives February Ferret played some part in precipitating this thread by landing on day 15 on "New Topic Challenge", and thanks to Mick and Jim for responding.
A lot of the enjoyment of a new thread is thinking how can I make a contribution, and enjoying doing just that. I have already dragged up memories of a day in spring 2003 and Hill End in Weardale to add.
One that came to mind today was Sandsend. Very steep hill down to it, just along from Whitby. I find that in 2022 they revived the Sandsend to Whitby Swim which was an annual feature in the 60's and 70's, cold water swimming just ballooning in popularity now in the 2020's. Interesting enough here's Yorkshire Post article on it.

Superb juxtaposition of Sandsend and the former railway, and the railway posters are just gorgeous...
...and if you want to go one step further, and are not someone who seeks instant gratification, and can appreciate 15 minutes or so of a simulated and excellent railway journey from Whitby to Sandsend, you may even find it both relaxing and enjoyable. It is not an actual journey which is possible now.

Re: Ends...
Wow! That's fantastic Neil Sandsend, and indeed the whole railway it was on, is often featured in the FB Disused Railways groups I follow... What a shame it was closed but then again it did have some fearful gradients and was a hard one to 'work' as a result... That said, it would have made an awesome heritage line...
Further along the line, the story of Ravenscar is rather fascinating...

From another part of the archives Sandsend has featured in
NeilNewcastleFalcon wrote: 15 Oct 2019, 23:23There is this nice pic of it (Sandsend Viaduct) on the link I posted up Steve (http://www.forgottenrelics.co.uk/bridge ... oftus.html)myglaren wrote: 15 Oct 2019, 22:18 There was a similar one in Sandsend, the railway used to run through the Kettleness tunnel - several videos of this on YouTube. We used to play in the tunnel as kids.

Thoroughly enjoyed that ride to Sandsend Neil, thanks!! Though I do have to say I kept ducking to avoid the lineside furniture and expected to see Thomas and Edward resting in sidings somewhere!!

Re: Ends...
One end that played a big part in my life back in my rallying days was the CSMA North West London Group's newsletter. I joined the group in the 70s and by the early 80s I had become a committee member and elected as newsletter editor. When I took on the job the publication had no actual name, just the CSMA NWL Newsletter so I suggested we have a brainstorming session at one committee meeting to come up with a name. Much enthusiastic discussion followed with all sorts of ideas thrown onto the table and in the end I suggested we pick "The Big End" as it was always knocking!!
As a result I became editor of The Big End for a fair number of years and so I thought I'd find a picture to post here, however The Big End is now available online so if you are interested you can see the list of NWL available editions here! It will also serve to give you an idea of the motorsport events programme still being run by the groups!!

Re: Ends...
The thread is generating some interesting contributions.
It might as well have this which was inspired by a POTD picture of a drain from our threadstarter Citrojim, and first appeared on the Pub gallery....and the odd hotel thread.

Reach in Cambridgeshire and the Dyke's End now a community run pub serving Woodforde's Wherry if CAMRA is correct. Nice touch Woodforde's do a home brew kit where you can brew your own at home!
