Ends...

Unread post by CitroJim »

Prompted by a bike ride today and my deep interest in exploring the UK via OS maps...

We have no end of 'Ends' around here and indeed I live in one... Tickford End. There's a clue here as to what's near me ;)

Here's a local example, one of several around North Crawley in the very north east of Bucks near the Bedfordshire border. Bedfordshire has a massive concentration of them...

I'll be collecting as many Ends as possible photographically this year on my bike rides as I do for finger-posts...

Is this part of the UK unique in having no end of Ends or do other parts have a good collection of them?

I can't for instance immediately think of any in Somerset.

I'd love to know about other Ends around the British Isles :)

Fictional of course but the site of one of my favourite films.

Nice one Paul :D Never seen the film but remember seeing bits of some episodes when I was a boy and being quite terrified...

Maybe I should now pluck up the courage to watch the film..

To join in with the posts on the "Ends" thread inaugural day I can offer this picture from the Falcon archives.

Not an "end" in itself but the superb moors road from Teesdale over to Weardale which drops down into a superb little picturesque place known as Hill-end. a few miles from Frosterley in Weardale.

This is the place we would call Hill End. It's the Bollihope Burn near Hill End.

I present to you - World's End.

On a track between the Horseshoe Pass and Coedpoeth near Wrexham in North Wales. I sped around these roads a lot in the 70s on road rallies and there's a water splash at the lowest point.

It's about four or five years since I last drove along the road (always Horseshoe Pass to Coedpoeth direction) and at a considerably slower speed.
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

Magic :D Keep 'em coming...

The trouble with a lot of 'Ends' is they're either small hamlets often not marked on small scale maps, not always signposted or localities within a town, village or parish, as is mine...

The fact they're not always obvious makes their collection a bit of an interesting challenge :D

Own work!
Own work!
These ends were discovered on my way to get my car this morning. Usually millions of the buggers but hardly any today.

All the ones on the web were copyrighted so had to take my own photo for a change.
