Hi All. I have a 2001 C5. The seal on the end of the steering rack right hand side has failed. Can this seal be replaced without removal of the complete rack from the car?

Hi
The Tie Rod Assemblies can be replaced, but Citroen no longer sell them. I believe you have to ensure the rack is held in place during removal too so it doesn't turn.

It's the rack gaiter that's some off, isn't it? These can be bought and normally replaced on the vehicle although, not having done the job myself, I don't know how difficult it is.
You will have to unscrew the track rod end from the tie rod so make sure you count exactly how turns it takes to come off.

The gaiter has come off, but the problem is the seal on the steering rack, where the actual rack moves in and out of the housing, has failed; the inner part of it is moving with the steering rack. Can this seal be replaced - after removal of the rack ends - without removing the entire steering from the car?Paul-R wrote: 13 Feb 2023, 10:36 It's the rack gaiter that's some off, isn't it? Re: C5 steering rack end seals
It depends which part is faulty - rack or tie rods as the right side one is more involved. Anyway if you need a part diagram / parts info, please see below:

Re: C5 steering rack end seals
I can get a seal for the end of the rack. Does anyone know if the seal can be replaced with the steering fitted in the car?

do you handle with this leak? I have similar problem, leak from right sealing on rack. Got correct sealing (corteco 01030113B 26x38x8 seal with white teflon insert) and I think about chances to replace without removing rack from car. Your experience will be very helpfull.

Re: C5 steering rack end seals
If it is leaking power steering fluid from out of the gaiter, then I'm going to say no, the rack will have to come out. I've not done a Citroen rack but all the other racks I've seen have high-pressure seals which means the rack has to be striped to replace the seal.

Re: C5 steering rack end seals
Rack construction in C5 looks a bit another. There is only wire ring to secure bushing with sealing. If remove rack end and this wire ring i hope will be able to push out this bushing and replace sealing. I make some screen shots from this movie to show what my plan
.
Anybody can confirm my plan?
Thanks a lot
