Steering Rack Gone in C5 Mk3 1.6 HDi 2009

Hi all

Hoping someone can put me in the right direction the steering rack has gone in my car the part needed has an OEM part number of "4000163" but only one I can find in a breakers has OEM part number of "4000164"
Would it be possible if can anyone advise me if this would fit or what the differences are in these steering rack parts ???

Hi, and to the Forum.

There is a known issue with the steering racks for the C5 X7, in that they were built to a price. As a result they have a higher than normal failure rate (one Forum member was on his third rack when he sold the car). There are companies who can (if it is not too far gone) refurbish steering racks. Some have got so good at this that they can have the old rack off a car and a refurbished on fitted in half a day or so. My advise would be to search for any companies in your area who can do this for you.

You nned to ensure the part matches exactly, as the racks are different according to the model / engine.

The difference can be the steering angle which are different, so will cause issues. However, you also need to be aware that your problem may not be just the steering rack, but the power steering pipes that are attached, as some of these are no longer available and getting them even second hand is very difficulty now because of all the issues with the racks on these models.

So I would check with your mechanic exactly what the situation is regarding the leak. As the pipes have to come off, any issue with them may only be seen at this point, so be aware.
