Hi All,
Haven't posted for a while and it's not a big problem but my car is about 24 yr old and have had some rubber sections needed replacing (Mostly LHM pipes, due to the life span of the rubber).
The other day driving along I changed gear and the plastic / rubber gear knob just fell apart! It has been degrading for some time but now the housing is cracked and bits falling off.
So I have been looking on ebay etc for a replacement gear knob. My problem is I am not sure which fits my car, It needs to be 'lift reverse' and standard 5 gear 'H' arrangement.
Can anyone confirm if it needs to be a Citroen standard part or will another standard 'lift reverse' gear knob work?
I have found this 1 on Ebay but am not sure if it will work?

Has anyone changed their Gear knob on a 98 Xantia?

That ebay one should be fine.

As a temporary fix Steve, when I had exactly the same happen on my last AX, I very successfully glued it all back together with superglue gel.
It lasted long enough that I forgot all about it and as far as I'm aware, it's still in one piece in the hands of its new owner...

Steve be aware the old one may be biblically tight even if it rotates on the spline and removal is pulling it upwards off the stick.
Do not look down at the gear knob whilst pulling it off the stick if you like your teeth and face as it is now

is it worth, or even possible, to put the 'C' of a combination spanner around the gear stick and whack it upwards while maintaining some distance from it?

Hi All,
Thanks for responses, lol, was a bit of a lame thing to post about.
Have taken the advice and glued the bits of the old 1 back together for now, will get a new 1 in time.
Is worth keeping the car going, I looked on the 'How many left' website today and according to that the Citroen Xantia 2.0L SX has only 8 left licensed and still on the road, nice.
Cheers again,
Steve
