oil dipstick broke

Unread post by habo »

Hello

Again a problem for nothing. It broke the brown under part of the oil dipstick inside the pipe.
It has broken at the end of the lower pipe and it has not fallen into the oil, when I try to put the other one it doesn't go all the way in. Should I try to push her? and if it falls into the oil, does it go and block the oil inlet?

I guess I should open it from below.

How the hell did it break so easily? How much would a metal one cost?

Would not worry about it clogging oil inlet, it's a nice big chunk of plastic so can't get past the pickup gauze.

I would not force the new one in for risk of having two broken dipstick bits stuck down there!

I too think these are a daft idea. The (similar age) EW10 has a spring with metal end = perfect. The dv6 was co developed with Ford, do I blame Ford for it!

Had the same problem with the wifes C4 1.6 hdi.

It snapped in the same place, I was advised to leave it and just get a new dipstick, After a while the second one broke, I removed the sump and found the lower portion of the dipstick tube to have a severe bend in it and the 2 broken pieces wedged in it, they would not go any further to the sump. I removed the pipe and cleared them out, the got another dipstick.

Number 11 in this diagram is the tube they were stuck in

Good morning guys, and thanks.
Problem solved!
The engineer's advice was to push it into the oil tank and there would be no problem. I tried pushing a flexible transparent tube with the same inside diameter as the dipstick's in order to do so, and as if by miracle it got stuck in the flexible tube and I got it out. Crazy right?

Sounds a good solution, could not have gone better than that!

Steve, I need to remove my sump as I have oil seaping through the sump joint seal.😢
Long time since I stripped an engine down and then it was reassembly with gaskets, so, the jointing compound Citroën used seems to be rock solid,
  • Did it separate easily?
  • What jointing compound did you use when putting it back?
Any tips before I start would be much appreciated.

I've taken the sump off a DV6 - will generally hang on just the sealant alone! I can't recall (will check at the weekend if get chance) but think there may be 2 shouldered studs which can be unscrewed a few turns and so push the sump off its face, breaking the seal. I didn't do this, instead used a wide flat blade scraper pushed into the gap, twisted slight and pop! Off it comes.

Bear in mind, due to the silly recessed sump plug, there's a good volume of oil inside an "emptied" sump (about 700ml from memory, I did measure it) so be careful not to end up wearing that!

Exhaust flexi section needs to come off ideally to clear the way. Access to some fixing is poor, think was 1/4 inch drive and long extension - near the lower rear engine mount I think.

It'll drip oil in your face from inside the crankcase seemingly endlessly, not a fun job in that regard.

I used a standard RTV sealant (loctite black "high performance" stuff I think, I can check as there are multiple varieties)

I did it Just like Matt says. Make a good job of cleaning all the old sealer off as new stuff doesn't stick well to the old stuff,

Thanks guys, luckily enough the sump on a 2.0 HDI is very accessible, and held by a number of 6mm diameter bolts.(10mm heads)
It's s just I don't want to distort the pressed steel flanges so I can get a good permanent joint afterwards.
Thanks for the heads up about the remaining oil😢👍
