Xsara engine cooling fan not work

Post by juhaszjani »

Please help. Engine cooling fan not turn on.
Checked every cable and fuse (in and out under the engine hood)
Changed 3 relay to new
Changed 2 resistor to new
Changed the fan motor to new
The cooling fan still not working.
What should I do?
I switched on the AC, the fan not turn on
I plugged out the temperature sensor, the fan not start.

Why do you think the engine fan needs to turn on?

I don't have the wiring diagram for your car, but on viewtopic.php?t=64677 there is a link to a dropbox which has a fan wiring diagram which is probably similar.

There will be 2 wires from the engine ECU to the relays that are grounded to give the different fan speeds. You need to check the voltages at the relays to work out what is wrong.

Have you tested the fan itself? Three common failures were the fan motor connection at the plug into the mounting, bad connections at the relays situated next to the fan, and worn out brushes in the fan motor itself. You need to get 12 volts directly on the actual fan spade connectors, see if it runs including trying to spin it. Use stick to spin it, and keep fingers well away!

Edit. OK , not motor itself if changed, but corroded wiring nearby can be a problem.

As I think you know, you should find the signal wires from the ECU that run the fan. These probably are active low, that is connecting to ground runs the fan. You might be able to short the ECU pin(s) to ground to do this, but is much safer to find where to disconnect from the ECU. Then without the ECU being involved, connect the wires to ground and get the fans to be controlled like that. Once they work purely as fans, go on to fault finding the ECU if necessary.

You may find diagrams on line. I doubt if there will be much functional difference between Citroen cars of about the same vintage, but unfortunately fuse boxes and wiring do differ in detail between models.

Manual Fan Switch.

A switch in your cabin you can press for fan on/off.
I do this for my car, works great.

Google: 'Manual Radiator Fan Switch'. Very basic wiring and easy to install.

Wire to inside your cabin? Use the bonnet release cable hole in bulkhead.
