ESP/EGR/ ABS Dash warning lights on.

Post by JohnC4GPVTR »

Hi everyone. Newbie here, I recently posted on another site but got very little response so I’m hoping you guys could possibly help me out.
Recently doing 70mph down Dronfield bypass and the ESP, EGR ABS warning lights came on, along with the SERVICE light and the automatic handbrake light. Did a diagnostic test and got Code P14a3, after some searching it appears the EGR Valve is at fault. Wanting to be sure the EGR valve would cause these errors and if so how to clean the valve whilst in situ on the car. Could someone point me to the air intake pipes or whatever else need to be removed to use Holts EGR cleaner hopefully to cure the problem?
Have a 2011 C4 Grand Picasso 2.0 HDi, VTR+, manual .
Thanks 🙏 in advance.
John.

Hi John, pop your VIN up (automasked on post submission) so I can determine exact model engine and build.

Hi Marc. VIN is VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff], reg SH11HSY, hope this helps. 👍
Sorry, it’s the ESP, ASR ABS light and the automatic handbrake disabled but works manually.
Thought it may have been the brake pedal switch but that’s been replaced and the problem still exists.

Certainly on 1.6 versions EGR faults cause a loss of engine info to the ABS ECU which the throws the faults you are seeing. Whilst an EGR spray might do something no substitute for getting it out and cleaning it properly. Don't know how hard that is on this engine though...

Thanks Richard, I’ve thought about taking the EGR valve out to either clean or replace, but the job of removing it on the Mk1 C4 Grand Picasso can be a bit of a bar steward and takes forever with someone with no vehicle mechanical knowledge such as myself!
If someone can point me to the bits needed removing to use EGR cleaner I would be happy 😃

Ok, so here is the fault descriptor for this code as it relates to this engine. So it's jamming which is causing the problem.
Fault Code: P14A3
Description of Fault: EGR exchanger by-pass: Confirmed jammed open (Hot side). Open position switch of the EGR exchanger by-pass not reached after 4 seconds even though the command is above 90%. Fault is triggered when the EGR by-pass is active.
Conditions for Fault to clear: Driving for 5 minutes from a cold engine, until the coolant temperature reaches 80°C
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active: Deactivation of the EGR function. Warning lamp MIL is lit
Symptoms: Noise
Suspect Areas:
  • Electrical harness
  • Connectors
  • EGR exchanger bypass control solenoid valve
  • EGR exchanger bypass
  • Fuse
  • Vacuum circuit

Thanks Marc. Knew it was confirmed jammed on the Hot side. Running engine from cold no lights, juddering of brakes. Hit 28Mph, no juddering, lights come on. Beep beep beep. Point me to the spot I spray EGR cleaner in, see if that helps. Checked fuses, they’re ok, so I’m thinking EGR before anything else.

There are lots of YouTube videos on this, but each has a slightly different layout as the engines are different. Be wary though as STP specifically state NOT to spray their product directly into the intercooler.

I think this one goes into manifold and EGR cleaning on the DW10C engines....

Ok, but I don’t know if this is connected but after the car is sat, sometimes when I try to start the car, all I get is a clicking, I thought it was the battery so i bought a new one, now I get the same problem sometimes, so I disconnect the battery a few times and it starts up. Could this be a wiring problem? I’m no expert so don’t know how to check all the wiring.

Can someone please show a photo of a C4 Grand Picasso Mk1, (2011 plate), 2.0 HDi VTR+ manual and point out the EGR Valve and where to spray EGR cleaner.
Many thanks.

Ok, so I've recently bought some Holts EGR & Carb Cleaner Spray, so this is my engine, 2011, C4 Grand Picasso 2.O VTR+ HDi, full manual gearbox, Where do i undo the jubilee clip and spray towards the back of the engine, with someone keeping steady revs on as indicated inside the box? Image

Right guys, so the problems continue on my C4 GP. Took car to garage, had the EGR Valve removed and cleaned and they said it wasnt too bad, charged me £50. Had them link up car to diagnostic kit, turns out the problem lies within O/S/R ABS sensor. Bought new sensor but not yet had it fitted, is this a particularly easy job that I could possibly do myself? Now, problem 2, try to crank the engine, all I get is a single "CLICK" each time, haha, starter motor methinks, garage agreed, bought new one, had it replaced, turned over a couple of times, and now the CLICK is back. Could it possibly be the starter relay or ignition relay or something along those lines. So far ive had a new brake pedal switch, new battery, starter motor replaced and EGR Valve cleaned out, but still "CLIICKS" on turning over attempts. Any ideas cos it's really starting to get on my nerves now. Had the car since mid Jan, and so far it's cost me a tad over £300, and still it doesn't want to run properly.
Please please help me
God bless you all.

A single click when cranking the engine sounds like a bad connection to me. The battery terminals would be the first place to check and go from there.

You can use a voltmeter to determine if the bad connection is on the ground side or the positive side of the starter circuit. For the ground side measure the voltage between battery negative and the housing of the starter motor while cranking the engine. On a good circuit it should stay close to 0V because it's measuring ground to ground. If you see voltage when cranking it shows a bad connection on the ground side.

To check the positive side of the circuit measure between battery positive and the positive post of the starter motor while cranking the engine. Again on a good circuit you should see close to 0V because it's measuring positive to positive. If you see voltage on the meter it shows a bad connection on the positive side of the circuit.
