Hello everyone, I have quite the mystery with my 2014 Peugeot 308 1.6 THP (156hp gasoline). Im a second owner, I’ve bought the car from the local Peugeot dealer, as a buyback car. Unfortunately I inherited a really bad problem. The first year the car was burning quite a lot of oil, but I thought nothing if it because I read on multiple forums, that this engine is known to eat a lot of oil. We’ll long story short I got a “STOP Engine” light and when I went to the mechanic, they found out that the cylinder walls were scratched (interesting enough, the scratches were horizontal), hence that was the cause with the oil burning problem.
I payed, a little below half of the car price, for repairs which included:
Every engine gasket, oil filter, pistons, water pump, tensioner, drive chain, cylinder block (yes a whole block ), spark plugs. (And I’m listing only the major parts of course)
After this major repair the car ran perfectly fine, for a year. I regularly checked all liquids, we did oil changes on 1000km, 5000km, 10000km (because its almost a new engine).
I thought that was it the car is now perfect but … check engine light. When you turn the car on it starts well and idles for lets say 30secs just fine, then cylinders 1,2,4 miss-fire and the car enters a “safe mode”, and starts working on 1 cylinder. That happens 90% of the time, if you somehow get past that point and the car warms up, the likelihood of miss-firing drops to maybe 5%.
So far, I’ve realigned the drive chain, because I’ve read that because it’s a really small one (like on bikes) it trends to move itself by some millimetres which might throw away the timing. That didn’t work so I replaced it, again no success. Then I replaced the spark plugs and the coils … no luck there too. I’ve also tries reseting and reinstalling the software. The last thing that has been changed is the high pressure fuel pump, and yes, no luck again.
So if someone somehow has gone through the same hell as me, can you please please please help me. I promise to fly to your country and personally buy you a beer.

Have it diagnosed with a decent code reader and pop the codes up here along with your VIN. That is a good starting point.

Hello, sorry for the month long reply, but had some troubles getting a code reader.GiveMeABreak wrote: ↑06 Apr 2022, 09:23 Have it diagnosed with a decent code reader and pop the codes up here along with your VIN. That is a good starting point.
So VIN: VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]
And faults:

Check the compression of the engine.
Would the cylinder scoring in the old block be consistent with the engine having had water in it? That could have led to bent conrods.

Here are the fault code descriptors to help you
Note the reference to running the diagnostics if the engine ECU is dormant as noted in the table below for this fault code:
The P0562 fault will occur if the battery is weak which will also affect the power steering which is electrically operated.
Make sure you don't have a near empty fuel tank while conducting the diagnostics as your fault P0313 is saying there is a minimum fuel level in the tank.

Fault Code: | P0562 |
Description of Fault: | Battery voltage signal : Voltage too low. Detection of battery voltage too low, following the starting phase. Battery voltage between 2,54 and 10 V (For 2 seconds). Note: for this fault to present itself, at least one of the following conditions must be fulfilled:
|
Conditions for Fault to clear: | Battery voltage between 10 and 16 V (For 2 seconds). |
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active: | Purge canister permanently. |
Symptoms: |
|
Suspect Areas: |
|
Fault Code: | P0313 |
Description of Fault: | Low fuel level signal : Minimum level reached. Suspicion of lack of fuel in the tank. The following conditions have to be met: - Engine management ECU in main triggering phase (After 1 seconds) - The "fuel level" information received from the CAN is valid - Fuel level low |
Conditions for Fault to clear: | 10 s after refilling the tank |
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active: | None |
Symptoms: | Information fault |
Suspect Areas: | Fuel level indicator |
Fault Code: | P1336 |
Description of Fault: | Combustion misfiring (impact on catalytic converter) : Cylinder undetermined. Ignition misfiring (Possibility of damage to the catalytic converter). The following conditions have to be met: - Engine management ECU in main triggering phase - Engine speed above 500 rpm and below a threshold defined in the engine ECU - Torque less than a threshold defined in the engine ECU - The crankshaft and the camshaft are synchronised |
Conditions for Fault to clear: | Stop the engine and restart, in order to re-inject into the cylinders cut off following the detection of ignition misfirings |
Downgrade Modes whilst Fault is active: |

Fault Code: | P1340 |
Description of Fault: | Combustion misfiring (impact on catalytic converter) : No. 4 cylinder. Cylinder 4 misfirings (Possibility of damage to the catalytic converter). The following conditions have to be met: - Engine management ECU in main triggering phase - Engine speed above 500 rpm and below a threshold defined in the engine ECU - Torque less than a threshold defined in the engine ECU - The crankshaft and the camshaft are synchronised |

Fault Code: | P0087 |
Description of Fault: | Fuel circuit : The pressure measured in the injection rail is less than the setting. Pressure in the fuel high pressure common injection rail lower than the pressure setting for a certain time (Less than 25 bars). The following conditions have to be met - Engine management ECU in main triggering phase - High pressure regulation active - The fuel flow is between 5 and 180 % - No adaptation of the high pressure pump in progress |
Conditions for Fault to clear: | The following conditions have to be met: - Each time that the difference between the actual pressure in the fuel high pressure common injection rail and the setting is less than 25 bars for more than 2 s, the counter is decremented. If the counter is lower than 2, the first part of the conditions for clearing is validated. - Each time that the difference between the actual pressure in the fuel high pressure common injection rail and the setting is greater than 25 bars for more than 2 s, the counter is decremented. If the counter is lower than 3, the second part of the conditions for clearing is validated. |
