2010 Espace DPF issues

Post by gareth20304 »

Hi All,

I have a 2010 Renault Espace that had to many failed re-gen attempts. We live on an island to motorway driving is impossible.

The DPF has been cleaned and I have Renault clip but I have no idea how to tell the car it's had a new DPF

Any help would be great

You don't need a motorway, but you do need to allow the engine to get hot enough that the exhaust gases can reach about 450 °C for assisted regeneration or 550 °C for natural regeneration.

So keep in 4th gear and find somewhere that you can drive at least 40 MPH or more if possible for a good 15-20 once the engine has warmed up to allow the engine ECU to attempt another regeneration. If you don't it will soon start clogging.

You may need to look in the repair / maintenance or engine ECU section and look for the option there to tell it that it has been replaced.

Do Renault have assisted regeneration?

I know they have assisted regeneration, but I think Renault's regeneration uses fuel instead of an additive and gets really hot, but the idea is similar.

Isn't injecting fuel just normal regeneration then?

The smaller Renault diesels used a secondary injection into the exhaust system before the CAT I think using unburnt fuel to increase the EG temperature. The run down the motorway or steady constant driving would be beneficial for the passive regeneration, much like PSA vehicles. From what I can gather this secondary exhaust injection isn't fool proof and may not always do the job, so the DPF still needs replacing / cleaning at some point.

But even with the assisted system that PSA use, exhaust gas temperature still needs to be relatively high for this to work. Add to this short journeys with constant switching the engine off and regeneration will obviously get interrupted to the point it will flag the warning after so many failed attempts.
