My Camshaft belt broke whilst driving.
The pick up guy said it might be a non-interference engine, but didn't think so.
Stuck and need to know whether it's worth getting the car fixed or scrapped.
Less than 80K on the clock.
been a nice little runner until now....
Petro engine.

Hi, and
to the Forum (even if it is for such a terrible reason). It may be possible to repair the engine.

Re: 2006 plate C3 Desire Is it a Non interference engine?
Welcome and most of us here found the Forum because we needed help
As James says post your Vin number up and it will look like mine to the left of this post, only Admins can see it.
Worst case scenario you would need a new engine or a rebuild, only you can decide if the car is worth it to you spending that sort of money which you would probably not get back but as you say its been a nice runner up till now then i would probably get a quote for the cost of any work needed, get a quote for the scrap value of the car and then work out what you can afford to spend to replace it.
Say its £600 to get a replacement engine supplied and fitted but scrap value is say £250 what would you get for £850 + any funds you have if that makes sense.

If this is a TU3 engine then it is an interference engine - most manufacturers don't make non-interference engines because of the efficiencies required to meet ongoing emissions standards.johead wrote: 26 Dec 2021, 09:43 My Camshaft belt broke whilst driving.

Petro engine.
So you may well have bent valves and bent con rods....
Please note, I'm no longer active on the Forum, so won't respond to messages.

Don't forget the car replacement price is sky high so 06 could be valued at double what you think
If able have valve cover off see if followers etc broke as some they break there rather than more internal mayhem, then remove head you see if valves bent plus tops of pistons if pistons look ok ie no holes or damage if can get a Depth/run out dial from somewhere often magnet base which you sit on block then measure difference between pistons top height if out by more than tolerances say will be a bent rod.
Getting conrods etc replaced on them could be a short block as much of powertrain engines who make PSA/Fords/Fiat/Lancia/Mini/Suzuki and others build engines with sheer bolts so can't be undone as want to sell heads or blocks only and no spares.
