Puretech 110 water pump.

Post by Pablo »

Are the water pumps on the Puretech 110 driven by the external V belt?

Just got home and my C3 Picasso has dumped it's coolant on the driveway. Not a trickle but a river running. I've left it to cool down and put 2 ltrs of water in, bearing in mind it may be airlocked now, but it's holding it's level so not a leaking hose. So I assume it's the pump and it's gushing out when the pressure builds. It's always had a hint of a leak since I bought the car in April but I have not had to top up the coolant.

The reason I ask about the V belt drive is that there's some debate elsewhere about getting the timing belts done ASAP on these engines and they say to change the pump at the same time. Don't see how the 2 jobs are connected if the pump is not cambelt driven?

Thanks for any advice

The perceived wisdom is that you should change the water pump at the same time as changing the timing belt as it is not uncommon for the pump to start leaking afterwards (as it may have been disturbed by the other work). As you have to do a lot of work to access the pump/timing belt anyway it is also cheaper (labour costs wise) to do them at the same time. It also makes sense to replace the other belt at the same time, for the same (labour costs) reason.

You can get a complete timing belt kit (which would include the water pump and its gasket) for a decent price. I recently got a complete Gates kit for around £150.

Thanks James.
I didn't realise there was so much work involved in changing the pump since I assume it is not driven by the cambelt.

There's no water pump shown on the timing belt detail - but the water pump is shown on the end of the engine water intake tank and is operated by a separate belt on this engine it seems.

If you need the parts diagram or parts numbers Pablo, we do ask for a Forum donation as we are charged for this info from Citroen. But this will cover you for up to 2 years of parts enquiries - for official live parts info. Details below if interested. I have your VIN already for your Picasso.

Thanks Marc
As mentioned previously I will make a donation.
Thanks for the info. I've since found a video and I can see that the pump is a totally separate unit, bolted on and driven by a V belt. There is no interconnection with the cambelt and either can be changed independently of the other.

I can understand the logic of changing both where the pump is driven by the cambelt but that is not the case with these engines.

I took the car into my local Citroen/Peugeot specialist and he could not find a leak at all.

However he said that the engine had been apart and put back together''very badly''. As far as he was concerned it was not economically viable to repair. So I took it to WeBuyAnyCar and pretty much got what I wanted for it.

Only bought the car at the end of April and it had already cost me £700 in repairs. So endeth my unhappy chapter with the Puretech 110 engine.

The good news is I am awaiting delivery of a C3 Picasso Exclusive HDi90 with 75000 on the clock.

Not sure how you can rebuild an engine badly perhaps you can show us what was rebuilt incorrectly?
