Xantia offside steering rack boot, how to replace

Post by CitroenCrazy »

Hi guys

Could anyone offer me any tips for replacing the offside steering rack boot on an S2 Xantia please ?
This is supposed to be the easy side !

I thought I was doing the right thing in getting a genuine Citroen replacement, but it's plastic rather than rubber and doesn't have much stretch. I've got it more or less in place, but I'm really struggling to see how I can get the rack-end to locate over the groove. Must be dead easy when the rack's off the car, but in-situ ?!?!?

My only thought right now is to try to find something more stretchy, even if it needs a tie wrap to hold it in place.

TIA

So, tonight I can answer my own question.

Yesterday, I spent a long time approaching the problem from the wheelarch. In the end, I concluded that I just couldn't do it. For me, it was impossible.

Today, a fresh perspective. I shifted position to underneath, dropped the back end of the undertray and found I could get my right hand in from above and two fingers from my left hand in from below.
It was all done in a few minutes. The boot isn’t impossibly tight and it popped over without too much cursing.

Basically, if this is your view, forget it

However, if this is your view, you will succeed.
