It seems that the Dipstick is broken at the end

Hah, great
Well, guess I'll just order a new one and hope the plastic causes no problem for now...
I found the engine was overfilled by approx 1l as well. Oh well, that's hurried car buying for you

If that dipstick is broken and there's oil showing when it's dipped then the engine is probably overfilled (maybe only slightly) again.

Re: C5 1.6 hdi dipstick
I had 1 break on the wifes C4 1.6 HDI, and was advised by various people that the broken bit would just end up in the sump and not cause a problem, which seemed logical so I bought a replacement, after a while that also broke, then while doing other jobs I decided to retrieve the broken bits from the sump
They didn't make it that far, The dipstick guide tube has 2 90 degree bends in it and the bits were jammed tight across the first bend and more dipsticks would just keep making it worse, so I removed the guide tube and cleaned out the bits.
