C5/X7 2.2HDi leaking metal water pipe from engine block

Post by citroen since 1973 »

Hi guys, I'm after a bit of help please. My 2008 C5/X7 2.2 Tourer is still going strong, but is now owned by my son and he's got a problem. He's been loosing cooling water and overheating. Yesterday, our local garage managed to find the cause, but wouldn't attempt a fix. There is metal pipe coming from the from engine block at the front RH side. This seems to have a welded/braised T piece coming from it at 90 degrees and the join has developed a small hole, leading to a continual drain of the cooling fluid. It looks like a bugger of a thing to get to and because it's very difficult to even see clearly, I have no idea how it's fixed onto the block, or even what the part is called. I was advised that we need to find an engine specialist and he has contacted Telford Engine Centre (near to where I live, he's in Birmingham), who can't look at it for at least a week, but any help would be appreciated please. Thanks, Paul.

There are 2 engine variants of the 2.2 engine, pop you VIN up (iw will be masked automatically) so we know what you have.

Ok, so you have the 175 DW12BTED4 engine. Can you identify the pipe from the following 2 pictures which are essentially the same?
175 Cooling B.PNG
(1) Expansion chamber.
(2) Coolant pump .
(3) Water inlet housing.
(4) Exhaust gas/water exchanger.
(5) (/) heater matrix.
(6) (/) bleed screw(s) .
(7) coolant outlet housing.
(8) additional heating (according to equipment).
(9) engine cooling radiator.
(10) (/) coolant/oil heat exchanger.

I'm sorry Marc, I should have taken a photo of the part at the garage yesterday and the car is now 35m from me! From what I can remember, the pipe wasn't a large one (like a rubber water hose), it was metal, I thought that it came from out of the front of the engine block and from the diagrams above, it may have been 7 - the coolant outlet housing. I'm sorry that I can't be more specific, but please don't spend any more time on it. I do appreciate your help, but I'm not being much use and I thiink that we'll just have to wait until he can get it into an engine specialist. I'll report their findings back here. Thanks, once again, Paul.

Can you identify it from either of these Parts drawings?

Sorry Chris, thanks for your help, but I can't identify it. I'll report back at the end of the week. Thanks, Paul.

So, update and sorry this is later than I intended. We took the car to our local engine specialist last Friday. The car had been with me overnight, it wasn't a long journey and so wasn't up to temp when we arrived there. Sods law, it wasn't leaking, but there was sufficient evidence from a rusty deposit to show where it was. Turns out that it's a short, metal pipe coming from the cyclinder head, rather than the block, with a 90 degree angle welded/brazed to it. A flexible (rubber?) hose then attaches to this piece. There is/was a leak from the brazed joint (according to the first garage we visited), but it could easily be the hose, which is the more likely culprit. The engine specialist hadn't got time to strip the car down and with a Bank Holiday coming up, plus the certainly, they said, that the local Citroen suppier would not have the part, they advised popping some Radweld in and seeing if this, at least, gave a temporary fix. We did this, the cars been back and forth between Birmingham and Telford over the past few days and all looks well. Fingers crossed and thanks, once again, for all of your help. Also, sorry that I've bothered you about what looks like something pretty trivial. Thanks, Paul.

I know this probably got you out of a fix, but I would err on the cautious side of adding anything like that - it has been know to cause later issues with the heating system / matrix if you have any air bubbles / pockets in the system - as this stuff usually solidifies when it finds air....

OH, not good news, thanks Marc. Would you recommend draining it now, or wait until we can get it booked in for repair, hopefully in a few days time?
