Hydraulic repair failed on steering
Hi all,
After a lot of cleaning and plugging ports and pipes it seems I have bought into a problem with my power steering hydraulic.
As you can see on the pics the oil is dripping from the low presure pipe and some kind of substance has been used to seal it into the port. It's rock solid and I can't get the pipe out.
I'm pretty good with mechanic and I can't aford a new garage repair... thanks to covid.
Any suggestions are welcome to keep my C5 steering even if I have redo it again after a while.
Many thanks
Bela

Re: Hydraulic repair failed on steering
I was think about using the Xantia Mk 2 power steering pipes and adapting them to the X7 system. But, time was of the essence and required a quicker fix. Fortunately, I found a company in Glasgow who had a refurb'd rack so bought that and gave them my rack as part exchange.
My HP and LP power steering pipes were in very good condition, only required new seals and careful fitting.
So far no leaks.

Re: Hydraulic repair failed on steering
Where did you get the seals from, you mean the o ring on the pipes going into the steering rack
Re: Hydraulic repair failed on steering
This may be a non-starter but I came across this About aluminium brazing for pin-hole leaks.

Re: Hydraulic repair failed on steering
It's been a very long time since I have brazed a piece, but I have got the pipe out the port. But now having murder with getting the wheel off to access the fixing to ease the pipe .
They used some kind of sealant on the pipe, but I'm trying to see if the o ring is the problem.
Any idea where I can find those, are they just rubber or different.
This one is pink if I can see right , the high pressure one was blue.

B1: Section Length 3.30mm
C: 'O' Ring Groove Dia 9.45mm
C1: 'O' Ring Groove Width 2.45mm
D: Section Length 8.60mm
E: Overall Length to Base of Swage 14.00mm
G: Swage Dia 14.90mm
H: Section Length 3.70mm
I: 'O' Ring Groove Dia 8.30mm
I: 'O' Ring Groove Width 2.78mm

Re: Hydraulic repair failed on steering
ShA (shore hardness) of 75 will be ok, Viton (FKM) quality.
I suggest ordering the next small increase in thickness as well as 2mm.
PSA are known to be not very generous with OE O-ring sizes, and a fraction of a mm oversize might be needed to get a really snug fit.
Cheap enough, and avoids need for a second order.
Lubricate with silicone grease/vaseline as you fit, to prevent scuffing.

Re: Hydraulic repair failed on steering
Thanks Chris, the suggested supplier only does big quantities, so I need to find another supplier.
Who are PSA... sorry am a little thick.
I found other suppliers, but they sell 2 rings for 4 pounds...

Re: Hydraulic repair failed on steering
Plenty of suppliers on eBay and elsewhere. Bearingboys https://www.bearingboys.co.uk/Metric-Orings-1631-c and Simplybearings https://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/Seals ... index.html are a couple of the countless suppliers that can supply Viton and other 'O' rings.
Sadly no longer a C5 owner
