406 1.9 td oil leaking centre intake duct retaining bolt? help!

Post by tom84 »

First I need to say that I am almost completely ignorant about cars; motor engineering; the 1.9 TD in particular (although I have the right Haynes manual) and have very few tools and space to work. So this is probably about explaining to my mechinic friend what the problem is before he comes to see me or I go to see him.

I bought this old car from someone who had clearly loved it a lot, and had been passed on to a neighbour following his death to sell. Said neighbour needed to get work done of the car before sale (he said water pump) and I think the mechanics did a rushed job. A few jubilee clips were left undone and there seems to be a couple of retaining bolts missing up the upper part of the big black tube that is above the block (intake duct?) and the centre retaining bolt of the centre intake duct, which connects to another pipe, is loose and oil (I assume it is oil because it is very dark and definitely doesn't smell or taste like diesel or veg oil) seems to be coming out of it and has splashed on to the second injector from the right and other places I can't name. Car drives fine, it seems, but this is concerning.

Please let me know what you think has gone on and if I can fix it myself.
thanks

Please, please post some photos of what you have there, so we can make sense of what's going on...

Can do this on Monday, thank you and thank you for your help in advance, this is a great forum. Just to try and be clear my main concern is that there is oil coming from the retaining bolt/junction on the centre intake duct on the 1.9 xud td

I strongly recommend you don't actually taste any fluids you might find in the engine bay

OK below is a link to some pics. The other thing is that the oil temp guage on the dash doesn't seem to be working. In one of the pics you can see i have focused on the stack of bolts that connect what i think are two intake pipes, this is where i think the oil is coming from. in other pics you cab see where bolts seem to be missing and where the oil has got.

Not the greatest way of viewing pix that, I prefer Dropbox; but from what I can make out I think maybe you're referring to

1: the Hose connection I've arrowed on one of my spare Cylinder Heads, this is just a Breather Hose and it should have a clip on it, but if it hasn't the simplest thing you can do is either open up a Jubilee or tie a Cable Tie around it, that'll avoid you having to take it off; but its probably not horribly insecure as it is.... and if the mechanic did indeed do a Water Pump its unlikely he undid this, so its likely been like it for some while.

2: the big black tube, the really wide section one, that's only an Air Intake, if any clips weren't as tight as they oughta be that's not the end of the world, coz its only carrying filtered fresh air anyway. If there are any noises from around the joints, or you can feel air, try tightening a clip or putting a bit of insulation tape around it.

Don't be thinking its gonna catch fire or owt coz you've got if there's a tiny bit of Diesel leaking, diesel isn't that flammable (its ignited by compression, not by a spark)

Not many XUD 406's left now, I suggest if its yours and its not rotten as a pear underneath (check its MOT History by entering the reg on the DVLA website, that you hang onto it), its of an era when things were a lot simpler and better engineered than nowadays

Thanks for the PM, and flagging up the photos.
If you don't find the leak immediately, try cleaning up the oily area - a hefty dose of bio clothes washing liquid in some warm water works well, and doesn't involve use of petrol or solvents - and see where the leak persists.
A split or loose hose joint is normally the culprit. Hopefully easily found.

Dear Both, thank you so much for replying, and sorry about the pics, I have at least rotated them around the right way now. I will put a cable tie around the breather hose - it has an undone clip hanging loose around it.

I am very pleased with the car, it seems relatively watertight and allinonepiece and so beamed with pride at your comments about its rarity. I bought it because I hope to learn a bit about cars with this one, having researched that this is a great engine from a good era. I would love to knw what everything does. I don't know an oil filter from a fuel filter, or, for example, how I would check the turbo was running ok (apparently I can easily find the little fan and give it a twirl to see what kind of condition it is in). I want to run it on recycled oil but don't know where to install an inline filter but that looks like an easy first job.

Yes, a great engine, capable of huge mileages and with very little wear.
(Just look after coolant quality, level and bleeding; the cylinder heads do not appreciate over-heating hot-spots caused by trapped air.)

Haynes did a particularly good manual for it: Citroen Diesel Engine, #1379.
The book covers the 1.7 & 1.9 XUD engines, turbo and non-turbo, and while written primarily as a companion to the BX, it covers the same engines fitted to various Citroen and Peugeot cars.
Exceptionally well illustrated.
