Battery Charge Fault

Post by heshamderbala »

Hi
I noticed that everyday in the morning an error message appears says '' Battery Charge Fault: stop the vehicle.
This message appears only in the morning after leaving the car all the night but all the day nothing appear this message appears for a while and then gone after moving with the car the service center checked the battery and the Alternator and the charging is good for both also as you know the C4 Grand picasso no way to leave anything powered after power off the engine so any idea what could cause that problem.

There is a known issue with this model concerning the drive belt tensioner rollers. This could be affecting the charging of the battery. Do you have any noise from the belt or the rollers? It may be sporadic, but the recommendation is to replace the rollers and the belt with the replacement parts - if this is the issue of course.

The warning to stop the car is because it thinks the battery charge is low and this can affect the handbrake - on this model it will not apply the handbrake if the battery is too low, otherwise you wouldn't be able to release it. So they recommend stopping and immobilising with chocks on the wheels whilst you have this issue.

Hi
Actually they changed these parts also and nothing changed i beleive it could be the multiple disconnection of the battery positive rod because of an error related to the oil sensor as there was a problem in one of the wires and after they changed it the problem of sensor solved and when they need to check there is no error appears for oil sensor they have to unplug the positive rod and reconnect let us say min 5 times
In your opinion does this could be the problem because i left them then went home and left the car all night and in the morning that battery message appears

Did they follow the correct procedure when disconnecting and reconnecting the battery: BSI Reset / Battery Disconnect / Reconnect Procedure?

If not you could have issues. You also have a Battery Charge Status Unit on this. This could be giving a false reading if there have been multiple disconnections, as the battery status is measured over a period of time and if the battery has repeatedly been removed and connected it could be playing with the readings.

Your battery may be in a poor state if it has not been charged properly (short runs). I suggest you give it a full charge overnight or longer if possible, so that you can determine once you reconnect it whether it is the battery or another issue.

Hi
Each time i test the charge of the battery it is ok and gives good readings even at the time the message is on at the morning.
Also why the message is only in the morning?

And they didnt follow any procedures after last time they did the disconnect they just do it to tell me the issue of oil sensor solved and they gave me the car.

Possibly because if the battery has been drained, the usage that it it getting during the day may not be enough to charge it sufficiently. So at the end of the day and during the night when it is left, there is still some electrical equipment that remains live and this could be further draining a possibly already already weakened battery.

For example - the electrical RCD circuit that waits for a remote unlocking request from your fob / Keyless system is live all the time, and any alarm you may have if installed (volumetric and perimetric) are 2 examples of electrical system that are active when the vehicle is locked.

So I do suggest you get the battery fully charged and see if the problem goes. Incidentally, how old is the battery? If it is the original battery, then it is probably well passed due for changing from 2014, as it will be over 6 years old, so won't retain a full charge at this stage I expect.

Ok so if you know the battery is good and the garage have checked it is charging, then just run it for a few days and allow the Battery Charge Status Unit time to settle down. If it is still not right after a few days then you need to do some diagnostics.

If that warning keeps coming up there should be a code logged.

Hi
I went to battery shop and asked them to get out the battery totally and make a full cleaning and noticed that the negative rod which is hidden in c4 GP is hafly covered by salt so they cleaned it very well and they put WD40 on both rods and next day the error appeared in the morning again and the day after also appeared but third day doesn't will check today and see if it appears or not.
Hope it it will not

It may be that the battery wires and terminals are corroded and making poor electrical contact. Sometimes a clean up can help, but other times you may need to replace the battery wiring connections if they are contaminated through to the inside. Sometimes battery acid / sulphur can onto the wires.

Hi
Finally problem solved it takes 10 days for the battery to inform the control it is getting a good power without fault and it was right that the negative rod is having a lot of salt on it and this condition takes long time after cleaning to return back the power to normal
Thanks for you all and I hope this will help others if having the same problem

Thanks for the update Hesham. The BCSU does 'poll' the battery intermittently and will take time (especially after the battery is disconnected) to start correctly reporting the battery state again.
