C5 X7 Timing belt

Post by Steve Walsh »

Hi All

Planning on fitting a new timing belt today, I have read through the How to do it on here and just a question from anyone that has done one.

Most of the tools I have or can make, Not sure how critical the Pinion Centraliser is, Can I make one ? and is there anything else critical in the tools department.

I have a very extensive tool kit and knowledge, But this is the first time doing a belt on one of these, I have done dozens on the old 8 valve motor and other makes, I dont want to strip it and find I need something I havent got.

Thanks

Steve

Are you sure this is a DW10BTED4 engine and not the DW10CTED4 Steve?

Ok, the DW10CTED4 was launched in late 2009 - so would of thought you would have one of these, but it looks like PSA had a lot of BTEDs to sue up first. They are both Euro 5 compliant engines, so were still able to be sold.

My procedure is here for this particular engine Steve:

I think it is to make centring the pulley easier.

Hi Marc

I had read through your procedure and just wondered if it was possible to do without the tool, or if I need to order one before I started.

I've long abandoned this job to my trusted mechanic / Dealer Steve, as I have the complete kit done (Belt, Rollers / Pulleys Water pump) and given how important it is to have it done properly, so can't really help you there, sorry.

Hopefully someone who has done the job will be along to advise.

Both my X7's are coming up for a cam belt change but shan't be attempting it before the warmer weather. I wouldn't think it could be any more difficult that changing the thermostat. :?

Have you ever tried changing a thermostat on one of these Marc? :x :? I couldn't find anyone that had done it. Done a few cambelts though but not on this engine, I will await your report. :-D Oh no, it was Steve wasn't it.

Belt done, took about 3 hours including making a couple of pegs for Cam and Crank. Not too bad of a job.

Hi Peter

I used Marc's How to instructions as a guide but a few shortcuts with a bit of knowledge from doing quite a lot of the older 8 valve HDI's 406 etc. I took the timing belt tensioner off to understand how it works, And the tool I was originally enquiring about is not necessary, but I made one just for the hell of it. The pulley on the crank for the T.Belt has a keyway wider than the key to allow slight adjustment to fit the belt, the tool is basically 2 bits of wire that goes in the slot on either side of the key to hold it in the centre. Measure the slot and the key, divide the extra width by 2 and insert a couple of pieces of wire to hold the pulley central. Sounds complicated but easy when your doing it. I also supported engine with a hoist and removed engine mount for better access. A jack underneath would do the same job.

Good luck

Steve
