AL4 - Rough 1st to Second shift when hot

Post by Chozen12 »

Hi,

Forum newbie here! I've just bought a 2010 308 SW with the AL4 gearbox. Everything works smoothly until approx. 30 minutes into a journey. After around this time the shift from first to second becomes very rough. It feels like it struggles to select second - when it starts the shift, the revs soar for a second (like it's in neutral) and then it engages second with a jolt.

The car has only done 40000 and has a full PSA Service History. I'm wondering if due to the low mileage (which indicates a lot of short cold running) whether a transmission fluid change would do the trick or whether it's something more sinister. I'm not getting any flashing indicators on the dashboard.

Thanks.

Can you post your VIN number so that we can check the specification of your vehicle?

Your VIN is way off - it should only be 17 alphanumeric in length. You have 19. At least one one in the last 8 is wrong for sure. If you are having problems reading it just pop your reg up and I'll get it from that after masking it.

Sorry I read the long number from the sticker inside the door assuming that would be the VIN. I'll pop the bonnet when I get home and get the correct number from the actual VIN plate.

The VIN should be visible at the edge of the windscreen through a small window. No need to open the bonnet!

That's more like it :)

308 (T7) 5 DOOR ESTATE 1.6 VTi 16V 120 (EP6) 4-SPEED AUTOMATIC GEARBOX

So confirmed as a June 2010 build date with AL4 Box.

I do know there is a technical service bulletin for this issue from Peugeot.

"Delay and shock in engagement of first gear - delay and shock in changing from first to second gear", however access to the TSBs are chargeable - so I can't tell you what it involves. I've sent you a PM concerning this.

Ok so the known issue on the AL4 gearbox for the issue of any delay and shock in engaging first gear, or from going from first to second gear can be after driving on a flooded road.

The cause can be ingress of water in to the AL4 box after driving in 7cm of water over 60M and at speeds of between 6 MPH to 50 MPH.

The action required is to drain the AL4 gearbox and replacement of the oil filler breather.

You'll need a Breather (part 226822)
A Clip pack (part 1319L8)
Drain cap seals
Gearbox Oil

Preliminary checks to undertake: Check to see if there is any presence of a white deposit or for any water at the hydraulic distributor or on the cover.

If there is either - proceed with the repair - if not, the repair is not needed.

Procedure for repair:

Drain as much water from the gearbox as possible:
Drive the vehicle to heat up the oil in the gearbox to 100 °C by manually changing through all the gears at good engine speeds.

Drain the AL4 Gearbox
Fill the AL4 Gearbox

The oil in the gearbox must be at 60 °C in order to check the level correctly

Check the level of oil in the gearbox and top up if necessary - repeat the operation 2 times

Note that 3 drainings are necessary to drain the maximum amount of water.

Remove:
Remove the oil filler breather and clean the area around the oil breather.

Fit the new oil filler breather (1).
Secure the new oil filler breather (1) ( at "a") using the clip (2).
Refit:
Check the operation of the automatic gearbox.
