Minor lighting major headache

Post by Toonmag50 »

Can anyone help?
My Peugeot 407 SW has a minor lighting problem which I assume will be a major problem come the MOT.

The lighting control stalk when set at sidelights allows both dipped beam and sidelights to illuminate.

The dipped beam setting on the control stalk is now identical, allowing both dipped and side lights to shine.

I have wiggled the stalk, squirted WD 40 into the stalk and fuse box in the engine bay, but no solution.

The Haynes manual reads like the grim reaper as I thought it might be a defective stalk switch, so looked up on how to remove.
Haynes states that I have to disconnect the battery, wait two minutes, then disconnect the airbag control, then remove the airbag followed by hopping on one leg for three spins.etc
In other words I'm not wanting to fiddle with airbags.
Any suggestions as I think the government agents at the MOT station are just waiting to get rid of older diesels at the first opportunity.
Thanks

Hi and welcome.

First off - DON'T use WD 40 on electronics - a sure way to stuff the electronics. Only use electrical contact cleaner like servisol.

Secondly, your problem is like the the control module under the steering wheel - often referred to as a Comms unit. Tis little box of tricks controls lots of functions and acts as a link between this module and the main BSI computer. Your lighting stalk may have work contacts causing the intermittent issues, but you may find other odd things starting to happen with the headlamps coming on and going off of their own accord, and other problems.

These units can be replaced with new or reconditioned ones. Pop your VIN up so we can see which module you have.

A BSI reset is unlikely to fix this, but here is the procedure if you want to try it:

BSI Rest / Battery Disconnect / Reconnect Procedure

I did struggle with that TBH - and took it to mean that the main or dipped beam lights were on when the setting was on sidelights only... Maybe the Op can elaborate / confirm?

Probably Marc - I took the opposite approach the way it was worded.

Sorry for any confusion. Thanks for coming back.
The side light setting is allowing side plus dipped.
The side light switch position at this selection point should only allow side lights.
I hope this has clarified my ramblings.
I'll come back in a moment with the vin no.

Ok, so the switching block remote control is part number: 96773906ZD - item (1) below:
407 Comms.PNG
The unit only comes with the lighting and indicator stalks - you unclip and slide out the Cruise Control and Audio stalks and put these int he new replacement unit.

You need to be very careful with the airbag (always perform the battery disconnection / reconnection procedure and wait 10-15 minutes after:

Battery Disconnect / Reconnect Procedure

Also be very careful with the clockspring and the steering wheel angle sensor that the ESP ECU relies on - if this goes out of kilter it will throw up ESP / ABS errors and will need to be recalibrated using a diagnostic tool like Duagbox.

Thank you very much. I'll order a new one and have a go myself.
I've found a couple of YouTube vids on the subject, the best one being a French one.

The clock spring on the videos didn't seem to leap out of control as soon as the unit was removed, so if I take my time it should be ok? Or does the clock spring come with the new unit?
The airbag is a bit of a worry, but on one British video, the host had the power turned on by the ignition key, as he removed the airbag and only switched it off just before he removed the power feed cable. DIY nightmare in the making.
I'll follow every step methodically .
This is a very efficient forum.
Thanks again

Do you have any recommended on line suppliers for this part?
The ones I tried most don't supply it, the only one that does , doesn't recognise the part name/number and only gives a manufacturers name, so I can't guarantee that it will be the exact fit, and this leaves me with mains dealer only.?
Sorry to be a drag with this
Thanks again.

Ok, so the part number I gave you was the replacement part (updated), but the original part number was 6242NA. Try searching on these part numbers only using the browser, don’t try a supplier directly.

This will provide the widest possible range of results.

As for the Airbags, it is prudent to allow 10 to 15 minutes to all of the Airbag ECU to dissipate the capacitive charge to be in the safe side.

As for the Comms unit, no, the steering wheel angle sensor is not included, so it is very important that the position is marked and noted before removal. Ditto for the clockspring. There should be an arrow on there to mark position.

Thanks again. That's comprehensive.
I'm thinking about scrap yards as first choice and then work my way up to main dealer if stuck.

Just be aware that there are hundreds of these and they all look alike, but it is important that you get the correct one with the same part number as it needs to be compatible with your car’s electronic architecture and options.
