India...What's Occuring?

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

This caught my attention about India recently. Yes while bits of the auto industry are contracting MG is expanding.
  • That great old British Chinese Marque MG, who are pushing their well priced vehicles pretty hard in the UK at the moment have announced they are to build their new Electric Car the ZS-EV at Abingdon Longbridge Gujarat India. The facility at Gujarat acquired from General Motors, was revamped at a minimum initial investment of Rs 2,000 crore, and will have an initial capacity of 80,000 units per annum in the first phase and will roll out its first car in 2019. MG was acquired by Chinese car giant SAIC in 2008. The latest facility, is spread over an area of 170 acres.
We will have to wait and see who acquires Swindon, or Bridgend for a bit of revamping and new EV Manufacturing.

Like MG, Redditch's finest went on a similar journey...expired, revived in the East, and imported back to the UK.

Nice documentary this, If there's nowt on the telly give it a go (although at least one of the contibutors got on my wick a bit!) Even has a piece on the wonderfully named Johnny Brittain the trails rider.

We have a thread on the forum called Car/bike Names what are the best?

Its no often that the newer crop of vehicles appear. Let alone any of the "special" names for the same model used in different parts of the world. It must have taken VW long hours of marketing meetings to eventually come up with "Rabbit" to call their Golf in the USA. Golf is bad enough ((imho of course).

So here are a few brand "new" models launched in the Indian Market which maybe don't make it into the "best" names thread.

Years ago a friend and I would amuse ourselves coming up with unsuitable car names. Some of the ones I remember:

Ford Skunk
Chevrolet Donkey
Austin Pussycat

Most are forgotten now but I do recall an awful lot were Fords!

Mitsubishi's Pajero was regarded as less than suitable for Spain. Pajero translates as w*nk*r.

One that got vetoed for the UK was the Fiat Ritmo, which got renamed Strada for the UK.
India, I think, produced a car called a Nibby . . .
And there's the Peugeot Jumpy, recast to Jumper for the UK.

Yesterday, we followed a new Kia Arona, which appeared to be going like stink.

I've dug out a couple of interesting names from our very own CitroJim. Not sure if he originated the term, but he did regularly use it in a derogatory fashion. I'll pop it up on the car names thread!

The RR Silver Mist was dropped rather hastily too :)

Funny how things crop up once your attention is tuned into it.

So, starting with watching the Timeshift Programme on Ocean Liners, and being intrigued by the gorgeous livery of the Union Castle line see POTD, I find that the Windsor Castle, the flagship and last of the line ended up in the largest scrapyard in the world................in India.

"The shipyards at Alang recycle approximately half of all ships salvaged around the world. It is considered the world's largest graveyard of ships. The yards are located on the Gulf of Khambat, 50 km (31 mi) southeast of Bhavnagar."

I like the name "Probe" still being used. Thunderbirds used it in 1965 for this classic episode
