X7 electric tailgate

Post by Trainman »

Opened the tailgate last night and it wouldn't shut, had to force it down. since then the tailgate only opens half way and it still doesn't close, I will get Lexia on later to see what, if anything I can find......

Is there an easy way to reset the tailgate I wonder?

DON”T force it!

There are lots of reasons why it may not shut including a backup mode if there is an obstruction detected somewhere in the seal, or a voltage problem, etc.

Get your Lexia on it and there will very likely be a fault code. List them here if any and I’ll be able to get a little more info for you.

These do not need reprogramming even if the battery is disconnected. The only thing that can be normally changed is the preferred opening angle.

Pop the codes up with your VIN and I’ll see what they point to.

Didn't have much choice but to force it closed, it was stuck up in the air :(

I'll get the codes and faults later when I get home from work.

Does it give the fault code itself?
FD7A
FD6A

for example?

No, no codes whatsoever, I’ve just noticed the switch on the tailgate (red one) isn’t lit, checked the fuse and that’s fine.....

These are the Actuator tests you can perform Steve with Diagbox. Note the testing conditions and see if any of these work or don't in the absence of any codes:
TitleDetailsAssociated messageHELP
Control:
Motorised striker plate
1 cycle for opening/closingThis actuator test must preferably be done with the motorised tailgate open:
Observe the movements of opening and closing of the motorised striker plate
Lets you check the correct operation of the motorised striker plate
Control:
Motorised tailgate
1 cycle for opening/closingThe motorised tailgate should in the closed position:
Observe the opening and then the closing of the motorised tailgate
Lets you check the correct operation of the motorised tailgate in opening and then in closing
Control of the buzzer1 long beep + 1 absence of beep + 2 short beeps + 1 absence of beepListen to the beeps from the buzzerLets you check the correct operation of the buzzer for the motorised tailgate
Control:
Lighting of the motorised tailgate closing switch
2 cycles in 16s
(1 cycle = 1 lighting (5s) + 1 extinction (3s))
Check the 2 cycles for "lighting/extinction" of the motorised tailgate closing switchLets you check the correct operation of the lighting of the motorised tailgate closing switch
Control:
Clutch of the motor
1 clutch cycle (Boot closed, the clutch declutches automatically)This actuator test must preferably be done with the motorised tailgate closed. Listen to the clutch of the motorised tailgate, clutching and then declutchingLets you check the correct operation of the clutch of the motor of the motorised tailgate

Also check the car isn't going into economy mode. This has been a thorn for Tourer owners with motorised tailgate. I did post a fix to defer Economy mode back to the delegation of the BSI from the Battery Charge Status Unit due to the very short operational times it was providing any equipment with ignition switched off.

Economy Mode Fix (X7)

Tried the actuator test for the boot control, and it doesn’t unlock the boot, I also tried the buzzer test and that’s fine.

The red button on the tailgate isn’t lighting up, so I’m wondering if maybe the switch has failed? The tailgate comes half open using the fob and/or the exterior boot switch, but won’t close.

There are no fault codes showing of any kind

Ok, I'm having another look at possibilities - there's quite a lot to go through, so will report back shortly.
