Power steering pumps keep failing - Peugeot Partner Combi 2005 2.0 HDI
Had a chap replace a pump for me, it worked for about half an hour after being fitted and then stopped...
Deduced it must be a duff pump, ordered another and fitted it - same thing happened!
These are very basic units, just running off the belt... could it be a bad batch or might there be something else at play?

What actually stopped? In what manner did it cease to work?
Did the belt stop turning or did the pulley on the pump jam? Or did both appear to move but the steering was still heavy? Have you checked the fluid level?
Is it possible the steering rack is faulty? Why did you decide the pump was faulty?

Can’t comment on that supplier nor the parts, they’re obviously not OEM. If you want the proper part number post up or PM your VIN.

Belt running fine each time, he cracked a nut to demonstrate that there was absolutely no fluid coming out/pressure. Fluid levels fine, steering rack fine. Pump working when immediately after being fitted - locked the steering both ways and could hear the pump working. Then it conked out!

Thank you! Pretty basic eh? Is there anything in the circuit that could cause it to fail..? Or am I just having really bad luck with 2 pumps failing me in a row?

Only that the original pump costs £412.48 inc VAT from the dealer!
I’m all for getting a decent aftermarket pump, but it has to at least work . Some of those aftermarket pumps are from £92, and unheard of makes... So assuming you have filled it correctly and bled the system, if the belt is turning but the pump isn’t working then I would have to suggest it is substandard and not up to the job.
Did you source the second one from the same supplier? If so get a refund, don’t use that company again and source a decent make from another supplier of an original is out of the question, or get a used original from a breakers, possibly.
I’ll check bleeding procedures for you shortly....

Bleeding procedure:
Bleeding procedure:
- Top up the power steering reservoir level to the mark ( c ) on the cap.
- With the engine not running, turn the steering slowly from lock to lock in both directions ( Approximately 10 times) .
- Top up the power steering reservoir level to the mark ( c ) on the cap.
- Run the engine at idle for 2 to 3 minutes without moving the steering wheel.
- Bleed the circuit by turning the steering several times in each direction.
- Keep the fluid level topped up.
- (H): Maximum level ( Hot) .
- (C): Maximum level ( Cold).
- (ADD): Level minimum.

Thanks all! Given that I've already had two pumps from Carparts4less - I've one in a box ready to be picked up and returned - they will then send out a new pump, I guess I'll just keep at it until they send one that isn't a dud...
And thank you for the bleeding procedure, I'll ask the chap who fitted the pump if he carried it out properly. Would incorrectly bleeding cause the pump to fail so quickly?

Hydraulic pumps aren't usually damaged by having to cope with air, it's just that they're not usually gpod at pumping it or shifting it, or outputting full pressure if there is air there. Hence the importance of the bleeding procedure.

The X7 is different and is done with engine running (Electrohydraulic Pump) as there would be no chance in Hell of moving it without assistance, unless you are Bruce Banner and in 'Hulk mode'.

I've nothing on this except that it is made by Delphi, and is a pump with falling output with pump regulation of 100 to 5 bars.

I'd be tempted to place two old or very cheap baking trays under the front wheels when turning lock-to-lock repeatedly to save the tyres!
