C5 HP Pump rebuild

Unread post by Dommo »

Hi all

I've read on here a few times in the past that people have had their suspension pumps rebuilt, or at least new brushes installed. Is there a particular guide to this, or a go-to place to purchase the spares? Searching on google doesn't seem to show a great deal which is frustrating.

There's nothing in particular up with my current pump but I want to be ready for it to fail, or if it's recommended I'll change the brushes as a premptive measure.

For my C5 the servicebox part numbers are:

5277 A9 - part to be configured
5277 C0 - configured part and vehicle identity number (VIN) to be specified on order

Do we know what this means? I have a Lexia so I presume if I were to buy a new (or used pump to rebuild) I could use my Lexia to configure the part?

Thanks for looking. Dom.

As it's usually just the motor that suffers issues I'm planning on just replacing that if (when) it goes.

that way you can keep the rest of your BHI and there's no need to code anything or mess with ECU's.

Also from what I've seen on other posts, the main failure point of the motor is the brush residue causing a short circuit on the commutator blowing the fuses, rather than the brushes themselves wearing down.

Why not grab a second hand one and clean it up ready to swap in when needed?

I should be a candidate for this action but my C5 has done >225,000 and shows no signs of caving in (yet).

5277 A9 is the part that is not already programmed to your Vehicle on order.
5277 C0 Is the correct pump that will be coded to your vehicle on order.

So it is very important to source an identical BHI for your car if going second hand, as there are many types dependent upon model, engine and all the rest of it.

The failure on these can be an LDS oil leak from the reservoir that drips down and can enter the motor unit and then causes a short (fuse starts to blow) and of course the oil then gunks up inside with the brush material.

Most people I know have taken the units off and cleaned them up - but I'm not aware of any parts suppliers for these - only sourcing another pump and cannibalising it for the parts. Always a good reason to keep the area under the LDS tank spotless from oil so you can more easily detect if there is a leak. from the tank in future.

I know the company that makes the BHI ECU, is CINCH, but that's about all there is on it.

Not a bad idea. After mine blew the 40A once, I'm a bit nervous that there's something wrong with it. Touch wood I'm hoping it was just 'fuse fatigue' from the repeated high current inrush events. It's too much work to remove the BHI just to inspect the current motor so until it happens again I'm going to leave it.

I've had a couple of 'overflows' from my reservoir so the inside chassis leg is covered with LDS :o I've cleaned up everything I can reach but theres a lot of LDS now serving as corrosion protection on the left hand side of the engine bay :rofl2:

I don't think spillage from the tank is the problem with LDS ingress, the only one I've had with oil in the motor was from the shaft seal leaking, I obtained a new seal from one of the bearing suppliers using the old one as a pattern.

Gibbo, there are many places that the oil can leak from including the collar clamps, o rings and sealing issues - but on some earlier models the LDS tank (which is welded in 2 halves) could develop a leak at 'a' where the seam is, leading to oil ingress and contamination of the underlying motor and the subsequent blowing of Fuse F01. There was a TSB relating to this which clearly details the problem.

Later models from RPO 12174 had a lid fitted with a safety valve to help prevent pressure splitting the tank.

As it happens I've done the motor brush clean-up today.

Here's a link to the thread which should have a few useful pics if you fancy having a go yourself: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=60565
