Change headlights on Citroën C4 2005

Post by femtiolappen »

I like to change my headlights to xenon headlights , is it just take headlights from a c4 with xenon and it will work? Or is it a big project?

It might work but it won't pass it's next MOT. A car with xenon headlights also needs them to self-level which would be ok on a C5 but they also need a means of automatic headlamp washing.

The self-levelling device is built into the Xenon headlights, isn't it?
Headlight washers are not mandatory, but must be functional if fitted.

Yes in Sweden the headlight washers dont have to work , but mine is working 👍

So everything is in the headlight? Buy from a car breaker and then instal? Cable will fit? Its sounds to simple 🙂

Unfortunately not as simple as you think - the wiring is different for a start and the headlamps use a specific connection.
It's too complex to go into here but essentially I would say a non-starter.

The system has it's own Headlamp ECU and communicates via these other components shown below to operate the system correctly - they all need to be in place for the system to work. You would need front & Rear height corrector units fitted to the axles as shown below, plus the car's ECU would need to have the car vehicle reference heights programmed to operate correctly. You would also have to have ESP on your vehicle and the everything in the diagram fitted and configured in the BSI and various ECUs.

Here is the obligatory warning that Citroen State:
CAUTION : It is forbidden to fit an headlamp fitted with a xenon lamp on a version which is not adapted to this device.

That's the reason why you rarely hear of anyone doing the retrofit - as there is so much to ensure is fitted, calibrated and programmed into the BSI and other ECUs.

I should also mention that there are FOUR types of Directional Headlamps available depending on the build date with different lights and other changes - so just to add to the job you would have to ensure you have the correct ones and wiring.

It is possible that there is a sensor mechanism attached to the anti roll bar for those cars fitted with Xenon headlights. I was looking into fitting similar to my C5, and there is clear mention of a separate level sensor specifically for the headlight system.

The Height correctors are the same James - there are no separate ones for the directional lighting (which the C5 Mark I never had - only non-directional until the C5 Mark II onwards).

Similar connectors are used on non C5 / C6 models to relay the height information to inform the headlamp ECU - on the C5 / C6 they also communicate with the suspension ECU as well as the Xenon Directional lighting ECU where fitted.

I was going by this quote. It's from the VOSA document http://www.partinfo.co.uk/files/MOT%20C ... ghting.pdf -

It says " Vehicles with HID headlamps are therefore required to have a headlamp washing system (a wiper is not required) and be self levelling, which may be achieved either by the use of either headlamp or suspension levelling systems.
The presence and operation of these headlamp cleaning and levelling devices has been added to the test. Therefore, if a mandatory headlamp levelling or cleaning device is missing, inoperative or otherwise obviously defective, the vehicle will fail".

I stand corrected, I had mis-remembered the rules. Cars which were factory fitted with Xenons AND built before 2010 don't need washers, Xenons with power of less than 2000 lumens don't need washers.
