More problems with the C5 the drive belt has jumped three groves ?

Post by spiff »

Good evening after a beautiful day in Mullion Cove Cornwall : )

More problems with the C5 : )

For some reason the drive belt for the steering pump, alternator and air conditioning pump has jumped three groves : )

This on both the steering pump and the alternator, but not the air conditioning pump, it is sitting ok on that one.

I noticed a strange noise after we returned from collecting our supply of apples, a box load from the Spar in the village a mile away.

We refitted the belt correctly a couple of weeks back after replacing the steering pump.

It may have happened at the boot sale yesterday, while there I did a series of raising and lowering the suspension, plus turning the steering wheel left and right.

I did the steering movements with the car in the low position as that was the way I read Marc's instructions, I may well have got that part wrong ?

This was to clear any air from the suspension / steering hydraulics, it case it was the reason for the front suspension being hard.

We will take the front wheel off and the inside wheel arch panel tomorrow, to release the belt tensioner then move the belt back to the correct position.

Whatever you do don't continue to run the engine like that, if it splits or comes off shards of the belt could get under the timing belt causing it to jump teeth and leave you in a far worse situation than you are in now...

As to how it would have happened - not sure, hopefully someone else has an idea. The only thing I can think might cause that would be if the bearing in an idler wheel or on the tensioner wheel has collapsed allowing the wheel to rock from side to side and allow the belt to wander.

Once you have the belt off check all the idler wheels to make sure the bearings aren't faulty and don't have any slop.

The belt feels tight and as far as I could feel still had its teeth.

When I did the pump I noticed that the tensioner wheel has a bit of play in it.

We shall see tomorrow.

Hi Spiff, sorry to hear that!

The bleeding procedure is correct, but should be done on flat ground and very slowly when you turn the wheel -and yes on low suspension, as per the guide. It is the official procedure.

I suspect maybe the belt wasn’t tensioned correctly, or is it possible that the pump you replaced is slightly out of alignment?

Fingers crossed that’s all it is.

Good evening Marc,

The ground was a level field, I decided that it would be easier on the steering and tyres on grass : )

The tensioner has a bolt that you turn against its spring, then release to re-tension, it is difficult to see how that could be wrong as it is automatic in the way it works ?

Perhaps something seized up momentarily, causing it to pull against the tensioner and making a loop in the belt for a second ?

I remember the idler wheel did not look quite in line to me before and after fitting the pump, but as the belt had been running OK before the steering pump failed, I assumed it would continue that way.

The steering pump looks to be in line, but worth a check : )

We have just purchased a new metal detector, it will read down to 18" in wet sand, a few gold doubloons from a wreck and a newer C5 : )

I see the fixings you mentioned Spiff -

I’ve put a Diagram up of the rollers / tensioners Spiff. Are any of these loose on your car?

Thank you Marc,

That is so much clearer that the images in the Haynes manual : )

There was some squeaking, which disappeared after I fitted the repayment steering pump for the leak from its casing, I put the noise down to the faulty pump.

But just before I put the car away tonight I heard it again, though it quickly faded away.

The idler or the tensioner is probably faulty.

Often when you disturb things they go, at least I find it that way.

We will take some images and post up our findings tomorrow : )

Very true, I’m having my timing belt done in the next few days or so and opted to buy the complete kit that comes with water pump, gasket, all the replacement rollers and of course the belt. Seems daft not to Change those at the same time given the wear they suffer as time goes on.

Update have located belt and ordered : )

Have just ordered a Gates belt at £11.31, their reputation looks good with most, there is always going to be an odd one not happy.

There was aa ARG Automotive sold by New Continental Direct at £8.95.

No expense spared : )

The idler and tensioner are OK for a bit longer.

Hallo Marc,

Would you by chance have the OEM part numbers for the drive belt the idler and tensioner.

The belt came off as I pulled out of the garage to turn the car round.

Oh Boy hard going getting in in straight without power steering : )

The belt is cut halfway through, a passing tourist suggested staples and super glue : }

I have yet to look at the tensioner and idler.

Thank you very much Marc,

"I think the answer lies in the soil"

I cant do the accent online : )

It was a lovely day to be in the garden, rather than the garage.

Boy Citroen parts are a touch expensive.

The local motor factor in Helston was twice the price I paid, the internet has given us the ability to compare prices and quality.

The only downside is waiting till next Wednesday, still we have a bus pass.

Your belt jumping grooves is most likely caused by mis-alignment of one of the components it's driving, you need to carefully check that all the bolts are in on the alternator and that any spacers are in the correct place, run a straight edge across the outer edges of them all to make sure that they're all lined up and that there are no wobbly pulleys.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.

Good evening Gibbo2286,

I wondered if the belt splitting was caused by it jumping pulleys, or if it split and that caused it to jump ?

The bearings on the alternator, steering pump and drive pulley are all fine.

There is a small amount of play in the tension pulley, but not in the idler, though it is a little out of line and has been for some time.

I will check the alignment again, thank you for that advice : )
