Fan blower not working - 2013 X7

Post by Paul-R »

About a year ago I had a problem when the heater blower motor stopped working. I took the speed control unit ("resistor") out and was investigating a replacement when I thought I'd give it another chance and reconnected it. And, of course, it started working again. I gave the plug contacts a spray of contact cleaner and put everything back. The blower then continued to work for another eight months.

It stopped working again just before Christmas and I've only just got around to taking a look. I took the control unit out again hoping it was just a contact problem but the blower didn't come back to life. What I did find though was that the control unit got warm meaning a) it was passing current through and b) it was probably still working properly. Can't be sure of course.

I need to trace the wiring diagram to see what's happening I think. Judging by the wire colouring the unit is on the earthy side of the motor so how is the power delivered to the motor?

And if the worst comes to the worst, how do I get the bloody motor out?
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

Here's the relevant bit in 2 parts - you'll need to click to zoom these. The red line goes to the Climate Control ECU on the dash in the second half. I've added relevant component codes in the table below.

With this particular system, there are no wiring codes, just numbers. So the power is delivered from the engine fuse box to the blower motor control module and then on to the motor itself. I think it would just be simpler to replace - not too bad as it is near the pollen filter. You can see a picture of the vicinity from my pollen filter change post with pics:

Thanks Marc. It's certainly easy to access (now), in fact I had it out and partially dismantled looking for signs of charring.

I had an idea today to link the two thick wires on the plug of the controller to see if the fan then works. But I'll check the wiring diagrams out first of all!

Bypassed the control unit and the fan blows at full strength. So this means that either the module is faulty or the module is being sent incorrect information by the aircon ECU. Most likely the module but I would like to try a known good unit just to be sure. Also, I was right that the module is on the earthy side of the blower motor.

Ebay has a pattern module for £19.25 (£15.46 if I'm willing to wait for one from China) and one made by Hella (is this the same as Behr who made my OE one?) for £39.99. All probably hugely cheaper than one from Citroen.

Incidentally, it took me a full afternoon the first time I took the module out last year as I removed the glovebox to get better access. Now I reckon I can get the module out in less than the time it would take you to pay for your fuel at a self service station!

I would wonder what sort of quality those Chinese ones are... but Hella / Behr seem a better bet. The Citroen ones are £131.77 inc. at present Paul.

[VictorMeldrew] I don't believe it! [/VictorMeldrew]

I couldn't get a decent S/H or new module organised in time to be sure it could be delivered or collected before we go away on Friday morning so I decided to put the old module back to plug the hole. And of course the damn thing started working again. It's not as though it's the first time I've plugged it back in again either.

So let's see how it lasts this time.

I don't know if it is at all similar, but when the blower control module on my C5 Mk1 I found (after I got a replacement fitted) that there was a bad solder join that meant the pin was no longer connected to the circuit board. I wonder if you have a similar issue? It might be worth taking a look.

I did inspect the board in the module as best I could using my jeweller's eyepiece but couldn't see anything. More out of desperation than anything else I did a bit of delicate poking with a small screwdriver so maybe that was what dun it?

Maybe it's an intermittent connection somewhere else that needs attention? Lawd knows where that might be.

Wait until it gets warmed up and see if it starts misbehaving again.

Two days and 950 miles later it's still working. Will continue to keep fingers crossed.
