C5 X7 Oil Temperature and Level Sensor

After a global scan with diagbox 7.76 to my citroen C5 X7, I get an error F40A oil gauge fault. The point is that it cannot be erased. Has anyone meet such an issue and if so, what did he do to disappear it ???
The strange thing is that there is only a temperature oil "box bar" display. Regarding the quantity of oil there is only a warning when it drooped under 3 litres at a total quantity of 4,25 litres.

You can't magically erase faults unless you deal with the problem - that is the point. Either the Oil gauge sensor is faulty or has been upset - until it is resolved ensure you regularly check with the dipstick on flat ground

Thanks for your advice Marc, I already check periodically with the stick the oil level. Could you give me a screenshot from Citroen Service Doc where exactly this oil gauge sensor is located ??

I've split this off into a new topic to make it easier for others to find in future.
So the first thing I would do is check the actual connector, use a little electrical contact cleaner and check the pins / wires are ok before anything else.

Component number 15 on the diagram and Citroen part number is 1131G2. They cost £72.42 new inc. VAT from Citroen UK.

So Here is the location of the sensor - this one is both a temperature and level sensor:

Removing
Obviously, wait for the engine to cool down first.
Place the vehicle on a ramp, disconnect the battery & remove the under engine protection.

• Unclip the canister purge electrovalve (3) from its support (2) (at "b").
• Release the purge canister solenoid valve (3).
• Disconnect the connector (Engine oil temperature and level sensor) (at "a").
• Remove the engine oil level and temperature sensor (1).

Refitting
Refit the engine oil level and temperature sensor (1).
Connect the connector (Engine oil temperature and level sensor) ( as "a").
Clip the canister purge electrovalve (3) on its support (2).
Refit the under-engine protection.

Thank you very much for your effort to find and collect all these useful infos for me. Next week I'll find some time to check the connector and spray it with electrical cleaner. If the problem persists, then I have to change the engine oil temperature and level sensor according to the procedure you described.

No problem - they look like they can get a bit 'gunked up' so regular oil changes may help prevent future deposits. I've never changed one personally - so whether it is any use trying to clean it up gently or not I can't say - but at least you have the part number and the instructions now.

replying to this old thread because I have the same issue now - F40A Oil Gauge Fault - however my C5 is a HDI240. Anyone have info on where the pressure gauge might be located?

I saw elsewhere on the forum that the error can be triggered by engine coolant not being cold enough, hence preventing oil temp measurement. I do generally fire up the heater before starting (even in intermediate temperatures) to minimize cold start wear... could this be the cuplrit, coolant too hot at most starts because heater running? Anyone know what the coolant temperature threshold preventing measurement might be?

There is a Technical Service Bulletin for fault F40A from the BSI - if there are no other fault codes present.

The fault occurs from an oil level measurement when the engine coolant temperature is higher than 40°C.

The oil level is measured up to a certain engine coolant temperature. Fault code F40A is recorded if the oil level has not been measured, as the temperature of the engine coolant was higher than the set threshold.

Fault code F40A will be cleared from the list of faults in the built-in systems interface when the oil level is measured.

So if you are concerned, take a manual measurement from the dipstick for checking purposes. Once the system has taken a sensor measurement again, the fault should clear.

Dear Marc, thanks a lot for your reply which was entirely correct!

When I came to think of it, it occurred to me that my gasoline V6 would always bring up message "Oil level OK" on startup... rarely/never saw this on the diesels, but just figured this was another feature changed/removed in the newer HDI240's, and gave it no more thought.

Anyway, turning on the ignition (even without starting) when car has not been heated still brings up Oil level OK message, so sensor is giving readout. And I can now confirm that F40A from BSI clears after starting up engine without pre-heating.

Conclusion: since this important test is skipped when using the heater before starting the car, regularly do dipstick check or turn on ignition without pre-heating in order to verify oil level if using the heater for each start!
