Citroen Xantia 1.9d 210,000mls
Dear All,
I have just replaced the handbrake cables, front discs and pads.
I went for a test run.....brakes are great but there is a slight rumble from the front nearside wheel bearing.I have jacked the car up and there is a very small amount of movement when you push and pull the wheel.
I have had a look at the Haynes manual and there is a hint of specialist equipment i.e bearing pullers of which I do not have.
Would it be easier just to obtain the front hub unit from a scrappy or replace the bearing?
Thanks,
Rory

I changed a wheel bearing on my Renault 21 recently, which is pretty much the same job. I certainly won't be attempting it without a press again. Removing the old item involved MAJOR hammering and careful use of a grinder. Fitting the new one involved using a vice and the old bearing shell to press the new one in. I had to pull the vice handle round while my friend belted the vice with a very big hammer. Not something I will repeat.
With that in mind I say your options are a garage (shouldn't take much more than an hour with the proper tools, you can even supply the bearing if you want) or a secondhand hub. I'd prefer the peace of mind of a new bearing but it depends on your supply of time versus money and your intentions for the car.

I had a front wheel bearing changed on my Xantia for £80 at the local 'back street' garage. Given the hassle of this job, it's not even worth breaking the tools out! If you want a half way house get the hub off, and take that to your local garage and get them to put the new bearing in with their press.
