Synergie non-starter

Post by Tonyb395 »

Hello, apologies if this has been asked elsewhere but a quick forum search didn't answer my question.

1996 2.0l petrol Synergie running beautifully until there was a loud crack/bang from the under the car and fuel delivery ceased. Engine turns over and fires if fuel is introduced via the air box. There is no fuel coming through the feed pipe to the fuel rail. With the ignition on I cannot hear anything clicking or buzzing so therefore am I right in thinking fuel pump failure? Ho would that explain the loud bang? Can I get to the pump via the interior or do I have to drop the tank?

Many thanks

Tony

Can you tell us exactly which engine is fitted to your car, or post your VIN so that we can look it up, in order to give meaningful advice.

The VIN is missing a 7, but I've corrected that and it shows as a:
EVASION FAMILY SALOON 2.0 i Manual gearbox 5
INJECTION XU10J2 (XU/XUD)
MAGNETI MARELLI Injection system

Fuel Tank Diagram:
Evasion Fuel Tank System.PNG
Fuel Pump is 4

Yes that's correct. Thank-you very much. Is the pump accessible via the floor or is it a tank out job?

Its been years since ive been near a Synergie but im pretty sure its a tank drop down job to change the pump. Just like Xsara Picassos though you don't need to fully remove the tank just drop it at one side.
Must say ive never heard a fuel pump go with a bang
I would check if there is a power supply & earth at the pump when its turning over before buying a pump. Sometimes thumping the underside of the tank while someone is trying to start the engine can (temporarily) make the fuel pump start working again.

Thanks for looking anyway Marc. I didn't want to spend time taking the seats and floor out only to find I can't get to the unit anyway.

Wheeler- thanks for that. I was hoping to be able to test the pump without crawling around under the car but it looks like that's what's going to have to happen.

Regards to you both, thanks.

You can access the fuel pump/sender unit by just lowering the offside of the tank, it will lower just enough to get it out, no need to undo the fuel filler pipe.

Thank-you Ken.

Had another look today and I don't know what has happened but the pump is working and there's fuel in the rail but still won't start.

If it went with a bang, I would be checking the valve timing.

Ok, latest installment on the non-starting Synergie.
Not even the scrapman seems interested so I'm going to have to try and fix it somehow preferably without spending £500 it!

We have fuel in the lines and in the rail and there's a quiet buzz when ignition is turned on but...
The plugs are not sparking yet they're dry. So this obviously means there's no fuel being sprayed into the cylinder and no power getting to the spark plugs.
What does that leave me?
The ECU?
Mine is a Maget Marell OD IAW 8P_22 if that means anything to you.
Is there anything else that I could try?

If you have no spark & no injector switching this would suggest to me a crank sensor fault as it sounds like the ECU is powered up ok as the fuel pump is priming. Can you confirm if there is a live feed at the injectors when the engine is cranking.
