Grrrr Electrics

Post by doctle »

The lights on my clock display seemed to be getting duller so I took it out and changed all the bulbs now none of them works! Is there a fix or would using these do the job? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2x-T5-Wired-L ... SwEetV9YO7. I also have power to my fog lights at the plug on the back of the light but no power to the bulbs on either side, how can this be possible?

The electronics on this seem to be working so a 12v supply to the bulbs should work I'm thinking. New unit is dear used seems hard to find and are expensive. I'm thinking LED bulbs, is there a dedicated 12v wire for these at the plug or would I have to wire it to the fuse box or into the lights? Thanks

I would check the light bulbs that you fitted first. Some years back I bought a load off e-bay, and several did not work (a few of them were because the two wires were touching, so they were easy to fix, but some were open circuit), which necessitated me pulling the instrument panel out again (GRR!). Now I test bulbs with a multi-meter first before I fit them.

I check mine with a 12V power supply to see they actually produce photons.

Been caught out in the past too :(

I tried the old bulbs as at least 2 were working before I started. I can't see any blown fuse either

Have you checked the fog lights feed with bulbs connected, could be that you have a bad earth.

Would there be separate earth for the fogs? I connected a voltmeter to the wire going to the bulbs but nothing there, low and high beams seems to work ok

Possibly not, modern cars are a mystery. I thought you said that there was voltage present at the lamps but they didn't work, if you have a high resistance connection it could read 12v until you connect the bulb and then drop to nothing.

Hi Peter I'm up at at it again! There is power coming to the plugs that connect to the light cluster. Nothing coming to the fog light wires. I cleaned everything with Halfords finest electrical contact cleaner but no joy. If I take the clusters out I'll likely lose the settings and have to get the lights realigned!

You mean you have a live fog light supply at the connector but the lights don't work?

That would suggest a poor earth from fog lights to chassis.

On an H1 (for example) there is only one obvious connector (and there is only one wire). However, the body of the bulb (where it clips into the mount) is the earth connection to the chassis. However, as you saw there is no power to the connector it suggests the problem lies UP the wire, and not necessarily with the earth, as I suggested (however, testing the earth could help to rule it out).
