Xantia Estate > Trunk cover hooks 3D print

Post by longgo »

Hi folks,
There was request from mate of mine if there is any chance to be made something about broken hooks for that trunk blind / cover. One option is 54e for set from Citroen or.. 3D printed new ones.
I spent some time measuring, modelling and test so here is some result that is kind`a OK for use / print.

Here are ready 3d STL files :

and in case you wish to see them as 3D object use that site: http://www.viewstl.com/

post notes:
There are 2 set of files. One is "clean" and is your choice how to print it, the other help my printer. I mean that with the "helper claws" give me good result on PLA print on cold bed. My first attempts even with OEM printer software helpers end as that:

Hope that will help someone else also :)

I don't suppose you could make the rear brake disc protectors like that. If they would stand the heat.
They're E90 from Germany for a pair. I had thought of making a pair from fiberglass.. but printing them might be a better option. I'm sure there'll be quite a demand.

That would be a great idea if, as you say, they'd stand the heat. Part of me thinks not as the basis of printable plastic is thermoplastics (not sure if there's a similar technique for thermosetting plastics? would be better) but then the other part of me says yes, as the back brakes don't do an awful lot on a Xantia... They'd likely be good sellers though if someone made rust proof replacements

A resin printer would be more suitable for that purpose.
High temp resin cured by light is much more likely to fit the bill.
I expect either would be too brittle though.

heh.. I was almost sure they are made from steel not plastic.Them protectors I mean.. But with watercut machine will be easy to produce from stainless steel. The problem is the profile. Well perhaps one wooden shape and when is ready watercuted from aluminium for example then hummer it over the shape(as mud car fenders in 30`s) and ta daaa :)

As time passed, I have to 3D print another set of that hooks, so I rework the file:
xantia_hook_1.jpg
xantia_hook_2.jpg
xantia_hook_3.jpg
xantia_hook_4.jpg
xantia_hook_5.jpg
xantia_hook_6.jpg
xantia_hook_7.jpg
xantia_hook_8.jpg
Now is with better design and easy or say proper for 3D print. As you can see from my screenshots, the vertical print come the clean one. Or in case you have access to 3D printer with PVA (water dissolving filament) , then better print it horizontally. My settings was 0.2mm per layer , 0.3mm initial layer, coolant from 3th layer, and wall count -> 3 , infill 25-35%

In some part of the topic was question for the option to 3D print some break guards or something as that. There are already industrial 3D printers that can produce parts from metal but will cost quite a lot.
The next option is to 3D print the part, and use it as mold core. Then when the material dry, you burn the plastic and pour the metal in it.. Still, quite rough to do it at home kitchen or garage... :-D
