Re: xantia brake problem
I suspect your brake calipers may have siezed up (they do this with age). There are lots of topics on the forum here about Xantia brake calipers, just have a search. It woulld also help if you posted up your VIN as there are different types depending on model.

It could also be worn discs or pads, dirty sliders, dirty callipers or some other obstruction.
Will you be trying to fix it yourself or taking the car to a mechanic?

Re: xantia brake problem
The first thing to do is to find out whether the problem is with front of rear brakes. Your problem could easily be the old 'rear calliper corrosion' problem where corrosion between the steel suspension arm and the alloy cylinder forces them apart until the disc is scraping against the calliper body.
Let us know how you get on.
This is what the view from above should look like (with new disc and cleaned up calliper)
There is a fairly thorough wiki on replacing discs and pads which may help once you have worked out whether the problem is front or rear (of course you could be really unlucky and find both ends have a problem!Let us know how you get on.

Re: xantia brake problem
If a brake calliper is binding, one very quick test is to feel the temperature of the wheel after a run of a few Km. The one that's binding will cause the wheel to be considerably warmer than the others...
It's easier to feel this when alloy wheels are fitted but with steel wheels, remove the trims before the test.

Re: xantia brake problem
Here is a good thread on what to look for (and how to fix it) on the rear brake callipers;

Re: xantia brake problem
Don't know why but I read front brakes.
The rears do have a tendency lean as described above causing the brakes to stick on Xantias.
The fronts tend to warp easily as well which is the other possibility. Worth checking all 4 though as if the brakes haven't been serviced for a while it could be both sets.

Or find a flat grass field with wet grass, you will soon find the binding one.

There are some green bits there and the temperature tonight is -1°C.
