Xantia Heater

Post by tim leech »

Strange thing, my 94 xantia 1.8 heater blows cool at idle but if I raise the revs it gets warmer?

Failing water pump or something else?

I would think it'd be a weak pump, as usually the issue is the car overheating when idle and cool when driving! either that or thermostat stuck open maybe?

Haven't driven it for years but it did run hot!

Worth changing the thermostat?

I'd say low coolant and resultant intermittent airlocks...

I'd check coolant level and then bleed the system thoroughly Tim...

In thinking about it, given that the car has not run for a while I'd also give the coolant a change/flush and refill with nice fresh stuff...

Will do, although it had a new radiator just before it was parked up

Maybe when fitted the fitter did not bleed properly perhaps?

I have bled it a few times but maybe it needs a flush

Failing that, check the thermostat; they don't last even as long as cambelts. I've put 3 or 4 new ones in the Green Lady in the course of 10 years (the first within a few months of buying her), though IIRC they all failed to open fully, rather than not closing.
