Xantia 1.9 glow plugs

Unread post by Old-Guy »

I seem to remember, but can't find any posts, some members having strong views about the relative merits of various brands of Glow Plugs. Anyone care to remind me please?

The back story is that, for the last few weeks, the 'Green Lady' (our S1 1.9TD Xantia Estate) has fired up first thing on only 3 cylinders, but raising the revs to 2000 has immediately got the 4th to chime in; either another air-leak or a dead/dying glow plug. Yesterday morning was bright and chilly and that 4th cylinder was quite reluctant to light up - my diagnosis: definitely a glow plug!

Last night, I had a bright idea: as my digital meter came with temperature sensor, I could find the duff plug by checking the temperature of their terminals after the light goes out - sadly it doesn't work, even doing it really quickly, they're all around 16-17ºC dropping quickly back to 15º (the engine is 14º), so I guess it's the usual fault of just the plug tip not heating.

I've used someone else's internet connection to get on-line now, and ordered a new router for a start (the dead one is ex-Sky and must be 9+ years old, so I can't complain) before starting to research glow plugs; GSF want £16.21 for NGKs and £17.78 for Beru ones. So the idea of buying 4 and replacing them as a set, has gone out of the window - as has the idea of using my last used-but-good spare.

BTW, I've changed the glow plugs before, so I've got the tools and the technique - I just need is a couple of days when the car won't be needed so I can take out the plugs one-by-one (hopefully not breaking any) until I find the one with the sooty tip; then I can order however many new ones are needed!

Genuine Citroen plugs ... just sourced for my Xantia TD at a decent price ... £6 per plug. Part number confirmed from service.citroen ... worth swapping the full set.

Beru only in a 1.9TD - although the listing above says might be Beru or Bosch - the ones in the pic are Beru.

IIRC Citroen fit Beru as oem.
A mate recently bought a set of four for a 306 1.9 D-Turbo for £34. May have been able to get them for less but had to go to the nearest autoshop before they closed.

I always used Bosch then Beru in my latest two diesels. I've had no problems with either.

Beru are OE and top quality. Should be available at any good motor factor.

I agree but in this instance it's the price point that's important.

£6 a plug should allow OP to change ALL plugs, he had been quoted a lot more from motor factors.

I received BERU plugs.

I'd personally only want to fit Beru or Bosch.

The ones in my last TD were Bosch and were still alive after about 6 years...

They were not cheap though from what I recall but I did go to a Bosch agent for them as I was in a rush.

I think a couple of the posts you may remember may have been mine...

Stay well away from NGK glow plugs ....they're not suited to the TD engine...I have this on good authority.

Cheers.

Cheers.

Definately Beru, I got mine from Carparts4less (ECP technically!) when they had a discount on and paid £29 for the 4 of them, and that was a year ago now (just dug the invoice up).

The ebay ones look like they have the same markings as mine did, and the lack of nuts!

Another vote for Beru here...

I found NGK disappointing...

There have been a number of folks found NGK unsuitable for PSA engines.
