Xsara Piccy rear noise

Post by rmunns »

I think I am hearing the start of a rear wheel bearing failure on my 2004 Picasso Xsara 2.0Hdi. About 78000miles. A bit of a knocking when first starting when cold, develops into a drone (but does quieten somewhat once I've done 3 or 4 miles).

How can I be sure that this is the problem? If I lift the car will I feel any play? Is it a relatively simple job?

If you take the weight of the bearings you probably wont feel anything, with front bearings the noise level usually increases when the bearing is loaded i.e. the o/s one when cornering left and vice versa, although that is general its not set in stone.

I would assume that rear bearings would behave the same so try weaving about a bit next time it does it.
